Hitachi 50V710 has a yellowish circle in the middle of the screen

My Hitachi 50V710 developed a yellowish circle in the middle of the screen and I am wondering what to do to fix it. I have had it for 2 years.

I have the same problem. My TV is about 2 1/2 years old and no longer under warranty. I thought it might just need the bulb replaced. But I guess the problem isthe optical block. Can that be replaced by an individual or does it require a technician?

  • Anonymous Jun 17, 2008

The optical engine is the problem. Hitachi has had problems with this model but wont cover the repairs. Sent to a certified Hitachi dealer for repairs.

Please comment. I have a 50V715 with the same chassis as the 50V710 (LC47); I want to replace the optical engine. What is the difference between the different variations:

    ux23682d
    UX23682DR
    UX23682DR-R
    UX23682

I have a LC-47 console and a need to replace my light engine.
    Thanks Mike

If you're good with electronics you can probably do it yourself. It's the price of the part that hurts ... around $1000.

I was able to find a new light engine for cheap. It did fix the problem. It's not too difficult to do the swap if you are good with electronics ... you just need to take your time and take notes on where everything goes (it'll probably take about 3 or 4 hours for on your first time in ... the next time will go much quicker after you have it down in your head). You'll need to search for the Hitachi light engine part # ... UX23682, UX23682D or maybe even UX23682DR (LC47 Optical Block). I've seen them for $400 up to $1400. I was able to get mine for a good bit less since it was a surplus part from a shop.

I would also recommend removing the light engine and cleaning the filters out each time the light bulb is replaced. There is a filter on the front side of the light engine that becomes clogged and causes the optical block to overheat and cause this problem. It may be a bit of a pain to open up the back of the TV every couple of years, but it will save the part from a guaranteed early death.

That's great! Which part of the optical engine did you use/buy? What is the difference between the variations:
    UX23682DR-R
    UX23682DR
    UX23682D
    UX23682

I don't want to buy the wrong one! The UX23682D seems to be the cheapest. Please advise

Any of those part numbers should work. The additional letters are there to denote aftermarket or rebuilt. After several years mine went yellow again... this time I opened up the light engine and cleaned off the burnt polarizing filter and replaced it with some polarizing filter material I purchased from China. I think it was called 3d lens. If I find the link I'll post it for you. There is also a link that shows how the repair is done. It's a repair that requires some skill but it's worth a try to save some money.

Hitachi model 60v500a.the middle of the screen is a little yello

If you Google "60v500a light engine" you will learn a few things about this set which was first sold in 2003.

There are some class action lawsuits out there for several Hitachi models made at about the same time.

Most of the time these sets develop a discolored area fairly large in the middle of the screen---a lot of them had a large red or pink oval area but other colors are possible.

This set uses a LAMP for the light source and it directs the light into the optical light engine--at the top of the engine is a 3 inch lens that the picture comes out of and is directed into the mirror which puts it on the screen.

Lots of these sets develop a "burn" inside the engine from the heat--there are a series of lens and baffles inside---even slight separation inside will change the color in some area of the picture.

I am sorry to give you bad news but I have replaced a lot of these engines under extended and when they were new mfg. warranty.

The part is no longer available from Hitachi new--the only way to get one is to remove the one in the set and have it sent out for "rebuild" and the last time I saw one the engine was over 600 dollars at the wholesale level not counting the fact that it is major labor to replace.

Find someone in your area familiar with Hitachi and this model and you will see what I am talking about.

Even though this is not good news, I think it is what your problem is.

If this helps you, rate this solution as I do this here for FREE.

Hitachi 50v710

This is not something you can just fix yourself unless you have extensive knowledge of repairing this product. It has lots of parts inside of it that are very delicate that only special repair locations can work on it. Otherwise they could even do more damage then good by tinkering around like an experimental project.

It sounds like somethng wrong with the motherboard which can be anywhere from a $50-$xxxx? Unless you still have an extended warranty...then you lucked out!

You can contact the manufacturer regarding parts or even service. Some times they can offer a flat fee for service at a local service center.

Let me know how it works out for you.

Hitachi 50v710 Yellow spot

I found out that Hitachi has a class action law suit against them for the light engine problem. I called them and asked what they were going to do for my tv which is out of warrenty. The reply was that they would pay for new light engine. I said what about labor. No they would not pay for labor. I asked to speak to supervisor. I was told by supervisor that the tv had to be inspected by certified repair person. Cost for this was $125 but would be applied towards the total labor cost. Repair guy came to house walked in and said he did not even have to turn tv on to know the problem. We called Hitachi to set up shipment of part. Hitachi told me at that point that they would cover all labor costs also. Part has been installed this week and tv is like brand new set.

Hitachi 50V710 Yellow screen

I contacted Hitachi (800-448-2244) on 02-18-09 and spoke with customer service rep. name Joyce. I explained the yellow in the middle of the screen and told here a Tech came out and said that the problem was the light engine not the light unit. She immediately said that she would send a brand new Light Engine to the repair company that diagonsed the problem. She said I would have to pay for labor. The light engine is a $1000+ part and the repair company said labor would be $300 dollars. The key is you have to say that a tech looked at it and diagonsed it as the light engine and not the light unit. Find a repair company in your area and let the customer service rep. know that they looked at it about a month ago and you can't find the paperwork. The customer service rep will then recommend a company in your area to come and look at the TV. The tech company will probably charge a tech fee $100+ dollars, and about $300 for labor, all total $400 for parts and labor is not bad when the Light Engine itself is a $1000+ part. Hope this helps.

Hitachi 50v710

Light Engine and Optical Block are the same thing ... just different names. It's listed twice many times so that it's easier to search on the web. Hopefully Hitachi will do something about it some day. I plan on letting everyone out there know about it so we can all go after Hitachi. There is a Suit filed against them for the 50v500 set that has the same types of problems ... perhaps it will cover the problems with the 50v710 also. Hitachi did absolutely nothing to help me with the problem. I had to find the part and fix it myself.
