I'm only getting 746 gb out of a new 3 tb internal hard drive

I can think of three possibilities:
  • It was pre-partitioned to that size, and more memory is available for another partiton (or to be added to that one).
  • You accidentally partitioned it to that size when you formatted it.
  • The hd isn't the size you thought.
You can right-click "Computer", click Manage, click left of "Storage" to expand, click "Disk Management". It should show you Disk 0 which is usually your C: drive, what percentage was used, then whether un-formatted/partitioned hd space is available.

The manual does not specify the usb size max.
I would expect not more than 8 GB to 32 GB max
Also remember fat 32 cannot support large file sizes more than 8gb

On a computer you have MG & GB. What is Tb for memory? Also how big is this TB compared to GB? Is it reliable for memory space? Lori

Mb, Gb, Tb all refer to memory size. How reliable these storage devices depends upon the quality of the device and how they are used and handled.
1 Mb = 1,000,000 bytes
1 Gb = 1000 Mb
! Tb = 1000 Gb

320 external hardrive

Most commonly, 297 GB is the formatted capacity of the 320 GB hard drive. You can check if there is any unpartitioned space left on your hard drive. Right click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management, locate the hard drive which shows 297 GB (a big reactangle). If this rectangle is all the way from left to right, everything is fine. Else it will also show another rectangle next to it as Unpartitioned space which you can format and use.

I am not able to copy large files like 5 GB to my Toshiba 400 GB portable. It says there is no disk space. Any help!!

in fact your hdd is formatted in FAT32 filesystem for compatibility reasons but this file systems only can read files below 3 gigabytes or so, if you want to copybigger files you should backup all your hdd info and reformat it to NTFS filesystem that can handle these files

Free space on my external hdd

If your External HDD file system is configured as FAT32 instead of NTFS, the max file size limit . By using NTFS, you get increased security, file compression, disk quotas, and encryption—features you don't get with FAT.

To convert the default (FAT32 to NTFS):
1.
Close all open programs to avoid loss of data. Be prepared to restart your computer.
2.
Open Command Prompt, and at the command prompt, type convert C: /FS:NTFS, where C represents the drive letter of the disk to convert. Press Enter or Return on the keyboard.
3.
Wait while the process completes. Don't do anything while the conversion is taking place.
You can also open a Command Prompt from the Run line (available from the Start menu). Just type cmd and press Enter.

Problems with transferring files

I think I know which limit you have hit then. The maximum size for any single file on a FAT32 system is 2^32-1 bytes which is 1 byte less than 4GB (binary version of the number, not decimal) or 4,294,967,295 bytes.

Free space on my external hdd

Check the file system on your My Book. FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB. I ran into the same problem when I tried to copy over a 4.5GB file from my laptop with NTFS on it. The file would not copy.
