Trying to hook up memorex dvd player. esa's menu doesn't have option to go to video. how do i get the dvd player working

unfortunatley, there is no AV botton on the remote. It's a very basic remote: numbers, game, sleep, display, channel return, vol, ch, menu and mute. No option on menu. Should I just hook up to cable box? Don't have the ESA program code either...sigh.....

You should see a button marked "av" on the remote, press that and you will find the dvd on the av socket you connected to.
alternativly, scrolling down with the ch down button sometimes allows you to goto the av channels.

I would think that "game" would be the av connection that you would use for a console or dvd player, unless it has a built in games console. Have you tried that when connecting the dvd to scart or r/w/y phonos?

How to set up my memorex DVD remote to control my magnavox TV?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to the manual in the link you posted, and from Google image searching to look closely at the remote, it doesn't appear to be a universal. The only way you can control your TV with it would be via the DVD player hooked into the TV, and then you will still only be able to control the standard functions of the DVD player (i.e. pause/play, stop, FF/Rew, menus, subtitles, etc.) but not the functions of the TV (i.e. volume, channel, power, etc.). Assuming you get yourself a new, actual universal remote to replace this with, I recommend this site in the future: http://www.remotecodelist.com/

My RCA XL100 is hooked up to cable and works perfectly fine. We've had it for ages and the picture is clear, sound is beautiful, and it gets along fine with my universal remote. There's just one...

Some of their very old sets the video input was located on channels in the 90's; Try scrolling down from 99 to 90 to see if you locate the video input; this is just the way they did things in the older sets.

Before you rate this solution let me know what you find first.

Why is picture scrambled on my memorex dvd mvd2016

The MVD is a progressive scan DVD player if your TV is 1080i or shows interlaced images only and doesnt have the option for progressive scan this would be an issue. I would suggest trying this DVD player on another television first. Also what is the model of your television?

Another issue is if you have and HD TV and are hooking up the A/V jacks to the HD component inputs this would also provide a jumbled picture. It would be a good idea to check and make sure that the A/V cabled are inserted into the correct input.

Hook ups

use a video splitter for the audio and video, or go out of the DVD player in to the DVR, out of the DVR into the TV (WARNING!!!! Trying to hook a DVD player to any recording device may trigger the copyright protection, causing blue flashes, and distorted pictures)
