Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initial tests:

  • if there is likewise no TX modulation, check / replace audio IC4 TDA1905;
  • if RX signal strength (S meter reading) is low, check RX + 8VDC;
  • try using an external speaker in case of a faulty internal speaker;
  • exercise the AM/FM switch.
If all of the above checks good, then signal tracing from the front end down to the audio amp. Would the schematics help?

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

    Appreciate the postback and additional information.

    The above schematics is for a President Harry using UT-322 board/chassis Uniden PA-259.

    I do not think that I have the schematics for a PA-435AA.

    Looks like signal tracing would be a good approach with attention to the IF filters for the RX problem of the Harry.

I bought a set of 2 way radios to keep touch with hiking partners. I've never used 2 way radios before and I'm clue,es as to how they function

If you tell us make and model, you may get a better answer. The instructions may have a better answer too.

Basically:
  1. Charge or put in batteries.
  2. Turn both radios on.
  3. Turn the volume up.
  4. Tune both radios to the same channel. Pick a channel that is quiet. Quiet means very little chatter and very little white noise. You can make a channel more quiet by increasing squelch but increasing squelch decreases range.
  5. Both radios are now listening.
  6. When you want to talk, press the talk button and say what you want to say.
  7. Remember you are just talking to anyone listening on that channel, so be nice.

This is a confusing website. But my problem is with a pair of Uniden FRS 420 two way radios. Have replaced batteries, gone through manual, have every option set properly but still have no reasonable...

Are you stating the volume is not loud enough when someone talks or just idling. If if has a squelch knob turn it til it makes a hissing noise or rushing noise. then back to where the noise just quits. This is the proper setting. Then when someone talks increase volume to listening level you choose. If this does not work take them back and get your money back.

Icom m36 will not receive. Speaker makes noise with squelch all the way up but just won't receive anything including weather.

You may have the CTCSS tone squelch enabled so unless a station you're listening to is encoding CTCSS tones, you won't hear the traffic you're expecting.

What is a voic box on a cobra 29 ltd? What is a good antt combo four a 29 ltd?

Cobra's LTD 29 model Citizen's Band radio features the full 40 channels allowed and a heavy-duty microphone. The radio provides 4 watts of AM radio frequency output with a switchable automatic noise limiter and noise blanker. Other features include Cobra's Delta-Tune function. Making a Cobra LTD 29 hear and receive better involves making changes to the radio's settings, including the settings specific to this brand.
M/F Turn the switch labeled "NB/ANL, ANL, OFF" to the "ANL" position and try the transmission again if noise is affecting reception. "ANL" is an automatic noise limiter function and reduces noise caused by the vehicle's electrical systems and electronics.

M/F Switch to "NB/ANL" to activate the noise blanker, which may also reduce noise if you continue to have problems. It's an RF noise filtration function and will help with ignition noise.

M/F Adjust the "RF Gain" knob by turning it clockwise to increase gain in weak signal areas if you have problems hearing radio traffic.

M/F Set the "Delta-Tune" function to capture a more listenable signal and get rid of adjacent channel noise. Rotate the knob labeled "Deltatune" to the center position for best tuning. Try micro-adjustments to the left or right as well.

M/F Turn the volume up if you still can't hear and as with any CB radio, adjust the squelch if the radio is noisy when there's no traffic. Turn the knob labeled "Squelch" all the way to the left to receive all signals, including noise and turn the control clockwise until the background noise stops. You will be able to hear the strongest transmissions without having to listen to weak signals and noise.

Do the Uniden walkie talkie (UHO36SX) on listening mode (RX) normally give out a loud rushing noise? It would be impossible to have it on in a quiet place waiting for someone to talk.

No, the radios should be silent (squelched) when not receiving a transmission. Appliances (computers, televisions, even refrigerators) can generate enough "hash" to break the squelch and give you that "rushing" noise. Make sure that the radios are at least 4 or 5 feet apart, and try moving them to different locations to clear up the problem.

Cannot receive faxes

Hi:

I quick way to really determine if the line could be a problem is try dialing your fax from another phone ,like a cell phone and just listen. What do you hear, noise, a recording, or do you hear the squelch tone that your fax machines should be putting out. If not then the line could still be the problem. Also if you recently switched to a DSL line then you should get a DSL filter and install it inline on your fax line. Also does your fax ring like it's trying to pick-up? If so, do you have the reception mode incorrectly set to TAD or manual mode.

Good Luck

Andrew

How to scan frequencies quietly

Yes...adjust the squelch control. This is usually a knob adjacent to your volume control. This should eliminate the static noise and you will only hear audio when someone is transmitting.

There is a very tiny switch on the back of the set near the external speaker terminals. This switch has likely gotton put in the wrong postion.
