Hi, The Superdrive has some functionality ...

=> I managed to install drivers from HP printer after 7 tries,

I managed to install files from the original Apple install disk delivered with the Imac in 1 try, but when i wanted to update some stuff from ythe apple application disk, it looked like the cd-player just hung, and repeated a continuous searching sound, without error. A force quit including restart of osx was needed...

With your Superdrive being dead out of the box, there is no need to be burdened with it.

Whenever you purchase an Apple Desktop or portable notebook, it automatically comes with 90 days phone support and 1 year of hardware support. So you can simply contact Applecare Support at 800-275-2273 (make sure you have your iMac serial# ready) to get that drive replaced under warranty of course.

But it may be even easier to take the iMac back in from where you purchased it and get that drive replaced or get a new iMac 21" from the store you purchased it from, unless it was via an online seller like apple.com direct, or any other Apple-authorized reseller online.

Considering your model is so new, I would recommend that course of action. Now if you are getting some functionality from that drive, then let me know and I will provide some troubleshooting procedures for you.

Hello wim_vanderma, and thank you for your candid reply, it helps to know what is on mind of our visitors coming to FixYa.com for technical assistance.

However, as an experienced onsite Mac technician for a number of years, I can tell you from experience, that when it comes to a Superdrive that is no longer functional, we consider such a component as DOA (or Dead on Arrival).

If the Superdrive, however, according to your information did have some functionality, then an EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) update or Superdrive firmware updates, etc would have definitely been recommended by me, as well as some suggested troubleshooting steps as needed. However, your original comments:
"dead HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N out of the box problem with imac 21,5"

gave the impression the Superdrive was pretty much broken (which does happen from my own experience and knowledge).

This is what prompted the answer I initially provided you. If you do have some functionality in the Superdrive however, just let me know. I will be glad to provide some troubleshooting steps for you. Otherwise, if the Superdrive is gone, there is no need delaying the inevitable- it is best to get that drive replaced.

Thanks again for your comments, it has been a pleasure assisting you!

    Regards,

    -Mactechtrainer

Try this site to register and download the firmware you need since most DVDRW drives dont really use "drivers" anymore.
