Thanks for this. This is a Canon Powershot A610. While waiting for your reply I found a solution which did talk about CCD and also possible shutter stuck. I did try looking down lens while taking picture and notice shutter did not open at all. But by your description of the CCD problem, I did notice that I could view older pics from memory card before the problem but not the ones since the problem. How do I know for sure which problem it may be (CCD or stuck shutter) or both?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, postback with the brand and model number of the digital camera.

Offhand, based on your description of " background..." on a digital camera but LCD displays menu & functions, it is almost always indicative that the CCD (charge-couple device) and/or its related electronic circuitry has failed. The CCD is the eye of the camera (Optical Sensor). The camera would seem blind. The fault could be confirmed if previously taken pictures still stored in the memory card could still be viewed but not the recent ones when the fault has started.

Unfortunately, CCD failures and / or its circuitry calls for intricate dis-assembly procedures, access to a service manual a necessity, specialized tools and equipment, a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair is not recommended.

Perhaps your best bet would then be to consult with and/or seek the services of an authorized Service Center or a qualified professional. Alternately, evaluate other options considering age of unit, parts availability, cost of repair, shipping, downtime and comparative prices of newer / better models. There would be instances where repair is no longer economically viable.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

The shutter is part of the electronics of the CCD. It is equivalent to the eyelids of the eyes. If the eyelids will not open even if the eyes underneath are good, the camera is still blind.

Repair wise, the shutter is an electro-mechanical window-blind keeping the CCD hidden. It will only open for a quick time to allow the light to enter. Due to its purpose and function, it is physically located in front of the CCD lens. And as you have posted that it will not open/close rapidly indicates a fault. Repair / dis-assembly would still be the same approach.

Brand toshiba lcd model 42HL167 no image but only menu dis ok

This could mean that the tuner board is bad. By saying "no image", does that mean that there is snow on the screen (i.e. from no signal received), or simply a black background or distorted image from bad reception? If the menu is displayed than that means that the image driving circuitry is working correctly.

HP pavillion dv9000 has black horizontal lines across screen and looks like a snowy background

Sounds like the screen is going bad. Isolate the problem by plugging an external monitor to the laptop. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker to plug to the laptop. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If the Borrowed monitor does not show the black lines and snowy background, that proves your video card is ok and the problem is your lcd screen. If the borrowed monitor shows the same black lines ans snowy background it means your video card inside the computer has the issue.

The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

Hp pavilionn dv6700 screen goes black after a while

If you shine a flashlight on your black screen and look real hard for the icons on the desktop. If you can faintly see them that means your LCD Inverter is bad. You'll have to disassemble the LCD Screen to get to it. In the mean time you can attach another monitor (LCD Flat Screen or the Old style fat CRT) with a VGA cable to the vga port on you laptop. Once you have it connected hit the FN (Function Key) + (F1 thru F12) key that that corresponds to the external display. Hold the FN Key while you hit the Function Key that is for the external display. The key might have the words LCD/CRT on it or it might show a display symbol. That's the key you want to hit while holding down the FN key. This will cause the desktop to display on the external monitor and verify that there is no problem with your Video Card inside the laptop.

This is the new way that Facebook displays images. When you click an image, a black pop-up will appear with the image and the details about that image. You can exit out of this box by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the black box.

The LCD screen on my 40D shows the image taken, or the live view image, but there are large areas of missing image. Almost like the picture has been laid on a black background then a large piece torn out...

If the Live View shows areas of total black, the LCD is probably faulty and needs to be taken to a Canon Dealer for repair/replacement. I believe the pictures are still okay on the computer in this case?

Canon Powershot SD1000: LCD screen display

Hopefully you resolved this already. If not, push the "DISP." button left of the MENU button. Pushing it gives you three options: black (for discreet shooting so your LCD doesn't give garner dirty looks from fellow concert goers), liveview, and liveview with info overlayed (shooting mode, ISO, etc.). Good luck!

The LCD is cracked internally. Unless you are handy and can pick up a cheap parts camera with good LCD on eBay it isn't worth it. It is actually a pretty good little camera though, the newer ones often have less detail in the images than this model.
