My IBM Thinkpad won't turn on after improper shutdown.

Always check power supply first. Ensure green/orange charging light appears in the LED bank near the screen bottom when adapter is plugged in. If NOT then charger or battery (or motherboard) is faulty.
A dead battery shouldn't cause a shutdown, so the charger is the first suspect. The yellow power socket can become 'rusty' in some cases so inspect this also. If the contacts inside aren't clean & shiny then try some WD40 after scraping gently with a 1 or 2mm flatblade screwdriver (with the battery OUT). If not even a P.O.S.T. (Power On Self Test - IBM logo)
appears with the CDROM and Hard Drive removed, Try cleaning the memory and swapping its position on the back of the unit. Good Luck.

Battery light on nothing else

Has there been ANY damage? Have you tried another Cord/Charger with the EXACT same power specs? Has the AC jack been damaged due to pulling on the cord while plugged it? Unplug, remove battery, plug in, try to reboot. Has it been overheating? Fan, vents, heatsink clean?

I have an older ibm thinkpad laptop, Tried to add memory, a new fan The power and fan and hard drive started , then powers down

Hi There,
Make sure all of your connections are tight, and that the RAM, HD connector, and anything else you've touched is seated correctly.
If you tried to put more RAM in than the computer will allow, it will not turn on. If you've unclipped a wire somewhere or your RAM isn't seated correctly, it will malfunction.
Check and then double check everything.

Ibm thinkpad R52 laptop no powering on, adapter is ok.

There could be a problem with the battery. A fast check to determine whether you have a problem with the power adapter, power cord or the laptop's battery is to turn off the laptop, remove the battery, connect the power adapter, turn on the laptop & see if it works.
If the laptop works directly from the power adapter with the battery removed, then the power adapter is good. In this case we can suspect that the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.

If this did not work, try also disassembling the laptop & make sure that all main components are seated properly. Also make sure that all ribbon cables interconnecting the various components of the laptop are tightly connected.

Try also to reseat the main components of the notebook: the battery, the AC adapter, the memory modules, & the hard drive.
After that try switching it on & see if the problem was fixed.

My IBM Thinkpad T40 2723 will not boot up

The first thing to try is to unplug the power adapter from the computer then remove the battery. Then press down the power on button for a second or two. Put the battery back in and reconnect the power adapter and see if it boots.

Barck the Power On Password

You MIGHT be able to get rid of the password by doing the following: Unplug the AC adapter. Remove the main battery. Find and remove the CMOS battery. Leave it like that for an hour. Put everything back. It will either work or it won't.

Total failure of IBM Thinkpad R50 after connecting sony clie PDA

Hi,
Your colleagues are correct, the problem with laptops is that the motherboard and powersupply are integrated,
if there is a seperate powerboard, usually the mains inlet runs through the mainboard itself to get to it. As it,s located under the touchpad. ( On certain Models )
What you,ve actually done is put an input current into your motherboard via the USB.
These are designed to output 5v pos And 5v negative. + 2 x Data transfer/signal in/out.
If you take this in for repair, you,ll be looking at £75+ Or $150+ Depending where you are. Just to Be Looked At.
For them to possibly charge you an additional £200+ Or $400 for a new motherboard.
Sorry for the Bad-News but i,d advise looking into buying a replacement laptop, and put it down to experience.
