Question about Whirlpool MH7130XE Microwave Oven

Whirlpool microwave fan spontaneously came on

We had a problem today, with our Whirlpool microwave oven. While not using the microwave at all, the fan spontaneously came on and would not turn off. The underside of the microwave got extremely hot within less than a minute. We unplugged it but are scared to plug it back in. It seems like it was about to catch on fire. Why would it spontaneously come on like that and get so hot?

Some of these unit detect heat from the stove while cooking.there are designed to turn the exhaust fan on until the temprature gets cooler to prevent any interior damage.
there also could be a problem with your microwave circuit board.
check with whirlpool and see if there is any recalled notices for you microwave

also check the inside of your door if you serial number starts with the letters xc then there is a recall on this unit if it has a green square in the door or it does not start with xc then you should not be under a recall status.and should have someone check it out

Spontaneously stops working and then comes on after 5 minutes. Why?

Sounds like the magnetron is overheating. There is an automatically-resetable thermal circuit breaker attached to the magnetron. Most likely your problem is caused by either a cooling fan that is not running, or is running too slow (caused by gummed-up bearings). In some over-the-range (OTR) microwave ovens, the exhaust fan is run at a slow speed to cool the magnetron, and if it's bearings get gummed up, it won't run on the slow speed. But if it's a new OTR microwave, then the exhaust fan may be pointing the wrong way. (It is rotatable, depending on the installation). For example, if it is pointing up, but you don't have an exhaust vent over the microwave, then the air has nowhere to go, and the magnetron will overheat.

Go inside and check all of the connections related to the fan. Check the fuses, and the fan itself.

"SE" error means you have a shorted membrane keypad.
On this model, the membrane keypad is not available as a separate part, so the control panel frame assembly (which comes with a new keypad) would have to be ordered and replaced.

It's actually a pretty simple DIY repair.

The frame assembly is part number W10258190 and you can get it for $67.98 (subject to change) from the Pros here. You can also order the thermostat (part number WB27X10567 ) from them.

Their is a video here showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Then you unplug the keypad as per the photo below.

Some connectors on the relays have a lock:

Our Whirlpool over the range microwave makes a clicking sound for a few seconds then shuts the microwave off. The microwave is unusable. The sound seems to be coming from the control panel.

If the cooling fan is not working, that would explain the shutdown problem. The function of the fan is to cool the magnetron down when it is warming or cooking the food, if the fan fails to run, the thermal fuse will detect heat rise causing a shutdown with in 5 seconds or more, the clicking suggest fan issues. I would recommend a whirlpool technician to go through the system.
