Canon PowerShot A510 "change the batteries"

I received my A510 as a gift Xmas "06. In 10/07 it started to tell me OFTEN to change the batteries. I was always using Duracell rechargeable batteries and thought that perhaps they were just not holding a charge any longer. Today I purchased new Duracell rechargeable 2650 mAh batteries and took just 1 photo. When I went to download some pics to my computer the camera asked to change the batteries. I instead just plugged into the wall and am still be asked to change the batteries. Please help!!!

Sadly the solution you offered wasn't the right one. I checked the pics you sent and they did not match the springs in my camera's battery compartment. I get this message to change the batteries even when I have no batteries installed and am charging with an AC adapter. ???

We have experienced the same problem with our A510 -- it says that the batteries need to changed even when new. We have sent it in for repairs without success. Anyone have any other ideas?

I have this problem as well. The camera is at work. I'll check the spring tonight and see if that's the problem.

Take a look at the following recall advisory for the A530/A540.

Look closely at the second picture. Does the spring on your battery door stick out and overlap/touch the metal battery contact plate as shown in the second picture? If so, affix a small piece of tape to the contact plate between the plate and the spring to insulate the plate from the spring. Make sure that the spring should not be able to directly touch the plate, and is shielded by the tape.

Note that currently Canon has not included the A510 in the recall, but if you experience this problem, this fix should correct it.

This may be a bit late, but I may have found a solution for this problem. I haven't tested it thoroughly yet so it might me a coincidence.
What I did:
Screw off the small metal plate that connects to the batteries.
Put some tape on the metal parts that are underneath it (watch out there's a spring in there and it can 'jump' away rather easily). Screw the plate back on.
I put in the same batteries in the camera as when it said "Change the batteries" but now they work (for quite a while and not empty).
I hope it works for you too. :)

How do I open the camera to load the batteries?

The Canon PowerShot A510 has a battery cover on the bottom of the camera. There is a battery cover lock on the compartment which needs to be unlocked. Holding the camera upside down with the battery compartment closest to your body the left hand AA battery is placed into the camera Postitive up - with the right hand AA the opposite.

Hope this helps

What is the maximum size of an SD card that can be used in a Canon PowerShot A510?

You can use any size SD card. Just keep in mind that SD cards max out at 2GB; any larger cards are actually SDHC cards and will not work in the A510.

It keeps asking me to change the batteries

If you haven't already, buy rechargeable batteries. I used to have the same problem. If you are using regular batteries, there juice is used up very quickly. I use Energizer rechargeable batteries and they recharge in 15 minutes. Also you'll have to buy the charger as well. I hope this helps your problem.
