Firewire not recognized.

I am using a Seagate 750GB external drive, with dual fierwier inputs. I bought a 6 to 4 firewire cable yesterday. I turned off my laptop, plugged the firewire cable in and booted up, but the thing is not recognized . I reconnected teh USB2 cord, and it worked fine. any idea what is going on? should i try a new firewire cable?

If running Windoze OS, then try plugging in the firewire cable after you are fully booted and see if it picks it up as new hardware found. That may get it configured for you.
Good luck.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge guarantee".

I need the software to get into my Maxtor one touch 4 plus

Hello,

all of the documentation and downloads for this product are now available via Seagate, as Maxtor was acquired. They are still supporting all the drives Maxtor produced for the normal periods of time.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format,when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

So the disk is recognized? And there is a valid partition on the disk?
What is the error you are getting?
Have a look at this external hard disk troubleshooting, maybe it helps you along.
