I have this same problem. The bargainBox solution may not be too helpful. This diagram is not similar to my model. I question the accuracy of the information. I also believe it is a timing issue but this drawing will not help. I am still trying to determine which adjustment will correct problem. Removing the plastic case is easy and involves 7 screws. This reveals a sturdy steel frame which is easy to get at any adjustment. Which adjustment? Good question but oil all you want this has not cured my problem.

Whether the machine is front or top loading, the relationship between the needle and the hook is the key to timing.

Take a look at this and see if you can adapt it to your machine, the theory is the same.....the relative position of the needle rising 2mm with the hook just so.......the method of disengaging the main horizintal shaft and hook gear may be slightly different to this, so see how you get on.

How can I adjust the timing on a brother ls 1217 sewing machine

Unfortunately, it's not recommended for users to repair their own brother machines. It sounds like the timing is out anyway... to take it in and have it "Cleaned, Lubed, timed and the Tension repaired"

Or you could use it for target practice and just go buy another machine.

I have a brother ls-1217 i was cleaning it and one of the springs that is on the inside on the left came un hooked from the bottom and I am not sure where is supposed to be hooked up to. Can someone...

Brother says DO NOT OIL!!

Sadly I'm afraid you'll have to take this in to a service location.

Issues with thread jamming and threading are normally issues with the wrong needle for the application. Your manual should have needle suggestions for different fabrics. Also before you begin sewing grasp both threads and gently tug straight back as you start your first stitches.

Good luck.

I have a Brother LS-1217. The tension will not adjust. I have re-threaded this several times, checked the bobbin and needle. Is this something I could fix and/or is it worth having repaired?

You should be able to fix this. IF it is the top thread on your fabric that is screwy you need to adjust the bobbin tension.
If it is the bottom thread you have a problem with your upper tension. Blow out the upper tension assembly using canned air, the tension discs may be dirty

How to thread the LS-1217

You can view or print the manual at the Brother website - http://www.brother-usa.com/manuals/default.aspx?PGID=3&R3ModelID=LS1217

Be sure the presser foot is up before threading.

Can't draw up the bobbin thread on my Brother LS-1217 sewing machine... it just won't catch

Make sure you have enough of a "tail" from teh bobbin... Probably 4 inches or so before starting. If that doesn't work, check upper tension and needle is properly seated.

The needle drags the thread down and then starts back up causing a loop at the eye which a shuttle goes through and acrries the upper thread over the bobbin. The upper thread then drags the bobbing thread up.
