It depends on the specific model of your particular processor, but in this case I think 78c is at or near the upper limit.

However, P4 processors will automatically slow down to a lower clock speed if the temp rises too high, so in theory it is impossible to actually overheat them. I've seen them running at 1 or 2Mhz with the HSF totally removed - but the OS was running so slow as to be completely unusable. Even saw a guy fry an egg on one once, and it kept running, but I sure don't recommend that as your thermal grease.

By this, it appears you suspect your cpu is overheating.
If the computer hangs or crashes resets itself.
then it should,nt be an issue.
If you are concerned, you could check the fan is working correctly. ( these tend to get clogged with dust )
Secondly, you could remove the CPU Heatsink. And check The Thermal-tape Or Compound. Use A good quality thermal paste such as arctic Silver.
Hope This Helps.

Can I use a Intel P4 HT 2.6 GHZ Socket 478 PC CPU Processor SL6WH with this mother board

Hi,

Unfortunately you would not be able to use it. Even though it has the same socket platform which is 478, the maximum FSB that the Motherboard can handle would be 500Mhz. The processors that you want to use has an FSB of 800Mhz. You can always try but there would be no guarantee for success, even if it does work, stability would not be achieved.

Hope this helps.

Can I use Pentium 4, frequency 3.0 GHz with Asus P4B?

Asus support says the fastest CPU you can use in that MB is a P4 2.6 GHz or a Celeron 2.8 GHz.

For the P4 you need BIOS ver. 1011 and for the Celeron you need ver. 1013.004.

Processor upgrade

Here is a link to the manual for the motherboard.
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock423/850/
p4t-m/p4tm-100.pdf

The manual doesn't really say what cpu speeds the board supports.
1.4 ghz was about the fastest processor speed when the board came out. My guess is that a 2.0 ghz cpu may not work.
It would be a slight improvement over the 1.4 ghz cpu, but not a huge difference.

Asus P4T-M version 1.05 Not Posting?

Hi ed, that 4-Pin ATX_12 connector near the CPU is for powering the CPU. Suggest you change PSU's. Though I'd agree there are some boards that have the 4-Pin connector & it's not used. Those boards usually have a 24 pin main connector & lower voltage CPU's Please check here at Asus web site for P4T-M.

I'm sure your P4T-M will boot after connecting the ATXPWR, ATX12V. As you noted, it would be nice if you could test the memory. When you get display you can test your memory for free by downloading a mem test program at. http://www.memtest.org/

Enjoy the weekend Ed.

Possible cpu upgrades for p4vmm2 motherboard

I see that you have already had this answered at Techspot.com They were right when they answered you, you need to check your MB manual to see if it is capable of upgrading to the CPU that you want to use, not all MB support all CPU's just because they both have 478 pins. I looked on the ASUS website and they don't even list your MB model on there.
