Question about PC Desktops

USB ports no longer working

As of yesterday, 6 of the 7 USB ports on my Dell XPS Dimension 9150 (XP) stopped working.

I had my printer, wireless mouse and wired keyboard plugged into the back
I had my 4-port USB hub and my headphones plugged into the front; a camera cable was attached to the hub but not to the camera.

Only one port on the back works now. My USB hub is now plugged into that and I have my mouse and keyboard attached. I can also plug in my printer and headphones at the same time and everything will work. My camera cable will not work in any port.

Here is what I have tried so far, with no success:

I unplugged everything and tried just my keyboard in each port, same with my mouse. Only the one port works.

I rebooted with only the keyboard and mouse.

I checked device manager to ensure everything was working properly.

I uninstalled all the root hubs and had Windows reinstall it on reboot.

I did a system restore to a week ago. (Everything was fine on Friday night.)

I searched for updated drivers. (None found.)

I flashed the BIOS.

I made sure the power management does not allow Windows to turn off the hubs.

What else can I try? I have one other device I need to attach directly to the machine instead of through the hub else it won't work.

If I had a problem with the spark plug wires on my car should I replace the engine block?

A suggestion to install a serial card would have been more appropriate. Thanks for the suggestion.

No, I have not considered the offered solution.

Your example is not exactly corresponding to my suggestion.
Ok you didnt say details i.e motherboard mfg no, bios type, date, operating system, i.e XP, Vista etc or if the devices you connect on PC have compatibility problems etc so someone can have better estimation about what happens on your PC.

I have a dell dimension 5150. I was attempting to upgrade drivers, and appear to have lost use of keyboard and mouse usb ports. As I cannot do anything on computer without one or other, its impossible to...

Are your devices wired or wirelss ? Have you tried another usb keyboard ? You could try booting up the machine, then switching the devices to another usb port and hope windows will reconize them. Last resort would be getting a real PS/2 keyboard at thrift store or if your really stuck, boot with a live-CD then you should have mouse and keyboard to try to copy drivers manually over to the windows folder.

Good video, no sound with my dell dimension 9150

You can try to get the drivers off of your CD or you can download the drivers from here:

1. Just choose "Select A Different Product"
2. Then choose "No, Choose from a list of all Dell products" and
select "continue"
3. Then select "Desktops"
4. Then select "Dimension"
5. Then select "Dimension 9150/XPS 400"
6. Now just scroll down and pick the drivers you need.

Don't forget to install your chipset and network drivers as well.

I can't find Ethernet Controler for Dimension 9150 Service Tag DB22PY81

You can find all drivers for your 9150 here.
The Intel driver for your built-in network card depends on your OS (WinXP or Vista).

(Your service tag might be outdated, so it doesn't work.)

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Keyboard and mouse won't work when pc is switched on.

Maybe the problem is in your bios the keyboard and mouse port maybe disabled, try to check your bios for you to enabled in case if it is disabled.

1 USB Port Failure

Hi Guys

Unfortunately after looking at the computer installation details i was at fault, although i have had
the computer for well over 2 years and this is the first time it has happened.
My Dell Dimension 5150 has 7 USB ports 5 at the back and 2 in the front and it appears that i have
connected the keyboard and mouse to the wrong ports.
There are two ports at the bottom allocated for the keyboard and mouse and for some reason i had
them in the top three ports hence my problem but still not sure why it happened.
Anyway my Dell Dimension 5150 is now running OK and no further help is needed.

Many Thanks.
