Hmm, found information for a Kenmore 117-959, however, Singer used to make a lot of sewing machines under other brand names.

It may be that the silver square object in front of it is to tight. I had this happen and I loosened that up with small screwdriver and put bobbin case back in and it helped. Had to play with it for a while. Or It may be that the bobbin case has chip out and need to replace that.

Is this a very old machine because the manual I"ve located doesn' look like the image on Fixya.

If you don't resolve the issue and this is a vintage machine, then there is some good user groups such as Vintage Singers under Yahoo where enthusiasts share info on their old machines. Good to lurk though or go through old threads first as there is often someone else who has asked similar question in the past. There may also be manuals in their files so have a dig around.
