Question about Garmin eTrex Legend Cx GPS Receiver

1 Answer

GPS Accuracy Hi, I have had 3 GPS units, (2 Garmin Nuvi's Model 750, & 1 Magellan Maestro 4250), and I returned all three units. My problem with them is that after putting in an address that has been there for over 30 years, the units would take me about half a mile past the programmed address setting. I don't know what to do about it. They were top of the line units. If I was in the parking lot of a place that was in the devices place of interest and told it to take me to that place, the Garmin or Magellan would tell me to drive out of the lot, and down the street to an empty lot. They would always send me about 5 addresses down from my brother-in-laws house in Maryland. Is this normal, or is their a problem with their map programming. What unit do I have to buy to get any kind of accuracy. I spoke to Garmin & Magellan and both company's told me to send the units back, so I did. One more thing, if I put in the Lat/Long of a place I was having trouble with (the Garmin), and told it to take me there the unit would work perfectly every time. Can you folks help me out ? Or give me some kind of advice of what I should buy. Thanks Ed skotleskie@comcast.net 610-932-7803 H

I had a similar problem. It was that the street addressing was wrong. Our street for example only physically goes to 199. But the software shows it goes to 299. This offsets all the address on the street, the farther I go the worse it gets!

Magellan Maestro 4250 GPS, the display seems to wash out on sunny days so that it is unreadable. That's without direct sunlight on the unit. Can anything be done or adjusted?

The Magellan 4250 LCD display brightness settings does not do much. I can understand how annoying it is to have the sun's glare on the display making it unreadable. You can improvise a simple sun shade like i did, cut and fit a card board strip on top of your GPS unit to block out the sun glare. It's just simple and cheap solution.

GPS had fallen off glass and broken power connector port( 5 pins in metal frame) inside of GPS. I can not put power jack into GPS.

From the Magellan website, http://www.magellangps.com/support/warranty.asp, their policy on broken screens:

"Magellan will replace receivers with a broken display returned within the warranty period with a reconditioned unit of the same or comparable model at a reduced cost to customer. Customers with a broken display unit returned outside the warranty period will be given the opportunity to purchase a new unit at a reduced cost or reconditioned unit also at a reduced cost."

Maestro 4250 frozen after incomplete 2009 map up date

I had same problem on 3/28/09.

According to Magellan and other people who have experienced the same problem, this is terminal to the unit. It can be caused by downloading the 08/09 Magellan map upgrade, which can cause the unit to permanently lock up. Magellan is well aware of the problem, and should offer to replace your unit if you have the problem. If you elect to have it repaired, Magellan can download the map upgrade for you in the repair process. Here is a site noting the same problem: http://74.125.93.104/search?q=cache:pNLjGT-i4-sJ:forums.gpsreview.net/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D8958+magellan+4250+gps+stays+on+blue+screen&cd=8&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Questions for Magellan: 1) why would they sell, in 2009, gps units with old 2007 maps loaded in them, requiring the purchaser to buy a current map, and 2) if there is a problem with downloading the current maps, why is there not an advisement or warning to the installer.

Other than replacing the unit, there appears to be no "fix".

No a practical solution, but at least you will get your device repair, after being on hold for 40 minutes I spoke to a very nice rep, unfortunately evethough she didn't admit it, it seems a software problem with the new 2008/2009 map update, in other words no way to fix it, you need to send it for repair, make sure you tell them to update the device with the new 2008/2009 Maps, if not you will have the same problem later on, Good Luck
