Question about Beltronics BEL 980 Radar Detector

1 Answer

Operating Voltage I want to hard wire my 980 instead of using the lighter adapter. Does the 980 operate on 12 volts or does the adapter also contain a voltage regulator for dropping to a lower voltage?

It is 12 volt (or at least mine is). You should be able to connect directly to a fused supply, but I would advise checking output with a meter.

Can it be adapted for a wall outlet?

First its not a Whistler product, its a Fuzzbuster.. Yes, if the AC adapter is 12 volts DC output and is at least 500mA then it will be fine.

How many volts I have a charger that has different volts which one to set it on I have a whistler 1610 just trying to put the charger on the right voltage

Most automotive electronics work on a 12 Volt DC system. You must be using adapter capable of providing about 12 to 14 volts because car batteries provide 12 volts; but car alternators put out 13.8 volts. Do not attempt to connect to an adapter that put out AC voltage!

What is the supply voltage

Supply voltage is the positive voltage supplied by the vehicle's battery + or positive post typically 12 volts. the other side is negative, if you are hard wiring an accessory in, make sure to go to your fuse panel, use a multimeter to verify it turns off with the key then get a fuse tap at a local parts store to connect.

I plug my radar in and as soon as i do it turns on for a breif second then shuts off. the cord is cut and the wires are wired into the car can this have anything to do with it?

Make sure that your ground and your 12 volt positive connections are secure. Did you wire the 12 volts to the fuse blox or to a wire under the dash? If you connected it to a wire under the dash, that wire may not have 12 volts or it may have 12 volts but not enough current to operate the detector.

I have a Whistler 35 R and the adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter fell apart. I would like to get a new adapter, but do not know the voltage/amp specs. Can you help with that?

All Whistler's that are not battery powered run on 12 volts with the center tip postive. You can order a power cord by calling 800-531-0004 or whistler's online store at

Car power adapter broke.

All whistler models run on 12 volts and the center pin of the power cord is positive.

Did self check on start up and then stopped working fuse and power supply are okay

You checked the fuse that is contained inside the cigarette lighter adapter, correct?

If that fuse is blown, get a new one at your local electronics store.

You should also verify that the power from the cigarette lighter adapter is on. You can do that by testing it with the actual lighter, or you can use a voltmeter or test light to determine if power is reaching the lighter outlet.
