Nikon MC-EU1 LCD Remote Control

Problem with Nikon MC-EU1

By Perkins - usenet poster

I just purchased a Nikon MC-ELU1 remote shutter release cable and am having
trouble getting it to work.  It does not control the camera at all.  Even
replaced the supplied battery thinking it might be bad.  No luck.

Ideas?  Thanks.

Search the newsgroup.  There is an alternate way to update the firmware
using your compact flash card.  Nikon doesn't support it, but many users
have had no problems.  You'll need a card reader to do it since you must
place the upgrade software into the card.  Doesn't fix the USB problem, but
you should be able to load ver 1.1  That might help you troubleshoot the
remote/USB thing.  BTW, since I bought a card reader, I've never used the
USB connection.

It seems to be using the short self-timer, as you said.  But now I discover
another problem.  In trying to upgrade to the 1.1 version of the firmware,
the USB connection fails.

Feels like I may have a bad USB port on the camera side.

What was the name of the driver you uninstalled?

Yup, got it Robin.

Success after working with Nikon tech support.  Problem was bad driver.
Uninstall in Safe Mode, reboot, plug in camera, voila!  Simple, huh?

If every technology worked like computers, nobody'd ever be able to watch TV
or listen to a CD.

Thanks, Mike.  I've followed the instructions carefully several times.  The
upgrader reports that the camera is not connected.  I'm using a Sony Vaio
laptop with three separate USB ports, and it fails in all three.

Nikon customer service is out until Tuesday because of the President's Day
holiday.

Yeah, I have a PCMCIA card that accepts the flash card, so I don't use the
USB either. I'll try the method you describe.

Thanks.

Thanks again, Steve.  I found the message detailing the CF upgrade method in
the archive and it worked like a charm.  The USB port still doesn't respond,
but 1.1 does appear faster than 1.0.

Tom,

Do you have the latest firmware installed on the 990?   I understand it is a
pre-requisite for remote to work properly.

Are you saying that it is not tripping at all sometimes or just that there
is a 3 second delay.  It probably uses the short self timer.
