Hi,

Depending on the actual model of the old Compaq, you can enter the CMOS/BIOS setup by pressing on the a special function key or key combination during Power-On Self Test (POST), before the operating system loads. During POST, the BIOS usually displays a prompt such as:
Press F2 to enter Setup
Common keystrokes that will access the BIOS Setup are F1, F2, F10, and Del. For older Compaq computers, like the Deskpro 286 or 386, you must place the Diagnostics diskette in the A: drive, and then restart the computer.
For newer Compaqs, like the Prolinea, Deskpro XL, or Presario, while the cursor is at the top right corner of the screen during bootup, press the F10 key.

The hard drive controller can not be replaced without replacing the motherboard. Incidentally, there are old PCI sundcards that has an IDE port and can be configured to replaced defective on-board IDE port.

If your concern has not been addresses after completion of the above procedures, you may need to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

You can likely enter the BIOS by pressing F2 at startup. If F2 doesn't work, try F1, F10 or Delete. If the onboard ide controller is bad, you can pick up a cheap pci one fairly easily (newegg.com is good).

How do i remove my compaq presario 2200's hard drive?

The Compaq Presario line is one of the longest-running series of computers, originating in 1993 and remaining in production even after the purchase of Compaq by HP. Because of this, many Compaq Presario desktops have required that some of their parts be upgraded or replaced because of the wear that they have received over years of standard use. One of the more commonly replaced Presario desktop components is the hard drives, especially given how much hard drivemag-glass_10x10.gif storage capacity has increased since the Compaq Presario line was introduced. Replacing a hard drive in a Compaq Presario desktop isn't difficult, and can usually be done in a matter of minutes even for users who aren't familiar with computer upgrades.
structions
  1. Step 1Remove the screws holding the left side panel of the computer on, then slide the panel back to remove it. Set both the panel and the screws aside so that you can put the panel back in place once the hard drive has been replaced.
  2. Step 2Unplug the ATA (wide, flat and usually gray) or SATA (thicker, thin and red) data cable and the power cable from the back of the hard drive that is currently in the Compaq Presario. Move the cables so that they will be out of the way, but make sure that they will still be easily accessible to you so that you can plug them into the new hard drive.

Are you trying to set up a raid configuration? If not I would reformat using the 98 disk and reinstall. (You may be able to skip installing 98, try installing xp first and it should ask for the disk containing the software (win98) that qualifies for the upgrade.

Hard Drive will not boot in Compaq Presario C700

BIOS checksum errors occurs when either the BIOS chjp is faulty or most likely the BIOS battery is nearly flat and the stored info changes and doesn't match the checksum info.
Replace the battery with a new one, leave the battery out for 1/2 hour before inserting the new battery. The BIOS will be reset to the default settings, you need to configure it again eg, datr and time etc.

Partition not 100% on laptop 700 presario

From the description loo\ks like it's not a partition problem, but the Compaq CD.
Try to partition Hard Drive using Windows 98 bootable CD.
Try to install Win XP from different CD - doesn't have to be Compaq. Later you can download drivers.

I want to boot from cd to change windows from xp to 98

enter the bios set up on start up. Go to boot sequence, change 1st option to cdrom instead of main drive. Save and exit. Let it boot up, put 98 disk in cdrom. Shut down, reboot and win 98 installation will begin asking you to over write existing ops sys. Choose yes and the install should be a breeze after this. Once xp is installed, dont forget to return to the bios and change back your boot sequence to hard drive as primary /master.

If there is a cancel button with the password prompt, hit cancel without entering a password, or hit enter without entering a password. Sometimes if there was a password, even though there may not be a password currently, the system will still prompt for one, if you enter a password then it locks. The other things you can try is: At start up, hit the F8 key and go into safe mode, log on under the administrator and clear any user passwords in the user accounts. You can also try, at start up, entering the bios or utility set up and check to see if the bios password setting is enabled, then disable it. Rarely, but on occasion, a hard drive will fail and cause the password prompt. If this is the case, then the hard drive will need to be replaced.

Turn it all the off. Then pull the hard drive out and put it back in again. Now, put your system disk (Win XP?) into the drive and turn the laptop on. It should do something else now. I have had this happen on several laptops I have rebuilt and it takes patience to get them started sometimes.... I have managed to load XP onto all of them eventually!

Hope this helps

Replace hard drive on Compaq presario 2190US

NO its a software crash use the installation disk you said you used......go through the blue screen allowing windows to boot up from that disc let it go right to the end and press "R" for the console (the dos line ) when there enter ....     chkdsk /p

Let Windows fix any problems. When finished remove the disc and I bet it will open windows for you.  Please come back and tell me how did you do because most people that I helped with this problem just run but you know old saying "what goes around comes around"
