Hi,

Two possible reasons:
1. the disk formatting system of the word processor is not compatible with your current computer's operating system;
2. the disc has been damaged and therefore unreadable.

The solution for possibility #1 is to re-save your "book" as pure text and try again;

The solution for the 2nd would be two fold. You need to get hold of a file recovery software and try to recover the contents of the diskette. Once done then you can format if so needed.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

    "re-save your "book" as pure text" - has to be done at the word processor where it was originally written or where the original file resides.

    Format of course would erase any and all contents of the diskette.

    perhaps you should try a recovery if at all your PC would be able to read the contents of the diskette this is again assuming that the file system is recognizable by your OS.

    and Hello again,

    Am I correct in my understanding that:
    1. your new PC is an Acer with Windows Vista;
    2. you have successfully connected and installed a Dynex DX-EF101 External USB Floppy Disk Drive to your Acer PC;
    3. you wrote a book in a Word Processor;
    4. in that word processor, you saved your "book" into a diskette;
    5. you are now trying to copy that "book" in the diskette to your Acer PC;
    6. when the diskette is inside the Dynex DX-EF101 External USB Floppy Disk Drive, the ACer PC will not read the contents of the diskette and you are asked to format it;

    If yes, then my original post still stand:
    a. the format of the diskette from the word processor is not compatible with your Acer Vista;
    b. you need to copy again the "book" in pure text form. The diskette must be formatted to suit the Windows Vista.

    Perhaps it may be to our mutual advantage if you can post the brand and model of the word processor.

    Cheers.

    Thank you for your patience and update.

    I was about to request the specific model number so as to look for an online manual. However this Smith Corona FAQ "Where do I purchase Owner’s Manuals" says manuals are for sale hence nothing available online for free.

    On another page of the FAQ, Is the information on my personal word processor diskette computer compatible?

    Some
    Smith Corona personal word processors diskettes are computer
    compatible. These are usually the ones that use the standard 3.5 inch
    diskette.
    If the Smith Corona personal word processor uses the 2.8 inch diskette,
    the files are not computer compatible. This data was saved in a
    proprietary language and must be converted in order to use with a
    computer. You may want to contact Pivar Computing Services, Inc. at
    1-800-266-8378 for data conversion.
    If you have a specific question concerning PWP data compatibility with
    computers, please call the toll free number at 1-800-448-1018 and have
    your PWP model number ready
    .

    From what I can gather, those models that can save the files to a 1.44 diskette uses ASCII which can only be read by a PC using a specialized program an ASCII to TEXT Converter such as here, here and here.

    Alternately, what can be done is to scan the printed pages of the book and use an OCR to convert them to plain text.

    I'm sorry but there is no easy way to go about this.

    Additionally, there are a few programs that are designed for this sort of conversion (Smith Corona Files to other file extension) ., such as this one. Still there are firms who do this sort of conversion such as Avanstar, Inc.

    This I'm afraid is the extent of assistance that can be provided. Offhand, the cheapest would be to use the scanner/OCR but that of course would take some time depending on the number of pages.

    Again, good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Trouble installing DX-EF101 on Vista computer

A USB floppy does not need a driver. That would be for Win98se. Something else is wrong if it doesn't recognize the driver a few minutes after you plug it in.

Need it to work with Windows Vista OS.

Your Dynex floppy should be pnp both on Vista and on XP. This means that it shouldn't need any additional driver. You just need to plug it into any available usb port, wait maximum a couple of minutes, and it should work automatically. Once installed it will be managed by your computer as any internal floppy unit. In any case, if you need to download the drivers you can find them here:

This worked with Vista. Plug and Play. Just look in My computer and it will show an A drive. Put in a disk and click on the A drive to look at the contents. Worked great. You dont' need a driver for Vista. Compatible with Vista as a plug and play component. Hope this helps.
