Canon Power Shot A610 The lens stays shut. The code E18 is shown in the lefthand bottom corner. The pictures already taken are shown but I cannot take any more. I've tried banging in the palm of my hand, have changed the batteries.

If the camera is used you may have a problem with the seller. Before jumping into conclusions however read your manual for your solution or simply search youtube for a help video. Hopefully this helped.
Okay let me get this straight, you mounted a Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens on a Canon T2. That's the Canon Rebel T2 right a film camera? If so you just can't do that because you mounted a digital lens on a full frame camera it's a wonder it allowed a manual shot the A6 is an error code for Transmission can not be made. The reason the 55-250 works is because it's a film lens or "Full Frame" where as the EF-S lens is for an APS size sensor with a 1.6 factor.
Please attache lens to your camera and set your camera to AV mode and set max. appeture 22 or more and front right side of camera there bottom edge of lens mount ring there is small black button.
press that button with shutter button and put your camera under light and press both button and check lens shutter is opening and closing properly if not and you getting err99
then lens diaphrm unit is faulty you need to replace it.
I see this same problem occuring all over the internet on Canon lenses. Autofocus not working any longer. For some stupid reason the lense will lock up and quit autofocus while other lenses will work fine. A light pull on the lense focus ring away from the camera body will give a noticable pop or click which unlocks the jammed lense. Try it if you are having troubles with your autofocus. This is a very common problem and worth giving it a try.
I have faced similar problems previously with my Canon 20d and Sigma 170-500. Its even more annoying to see it happen in field while it would be okay back home. I was told that it is electronic compatibility problem instead of complaining the best was to change the lens and hence bought a 100-400 and happy ending.
On most lenses the way to test if your old lens works on a cannon digital to set the camera to AV then set the iris to the small setting ie F16/F22 then use the stopdown button.
Things that might happen
1 The lens will close down OK
2 The error 99 will show, will need are rechip if avaliable
3 Nothing happens, will need a rechip
Q.Why will it work inside but not outside.
A. Inside the camera needs light so the iris is full open, outside the lens needs to close down and if not compatible it is unable to close down. will need a rechip
