Thank you for using Fixya Forums.

I just want to verify the sound 'Mute' button is locked, is that a button on your laptop or are you referring to the sound icon in the system tray? Are you showing a 'Red X' on the sound icon in the system tray? I have attached some information on updating drivers and some other troubleshooting tips. Please let me know if you are still having any problems or if issue has been corrected.
Update a driver for hardware that isn’t working properly

You can use Device Manager and/or Windows Update to locate the necessary driver for your system. If you know the manufacture of the hardware in question you can visit their respective website and obtain the driver from there.

Also, feel free to visit this help article found on the Windows Help and How-to website about Tips for fixing common hardware problems.

How to update drivers using Windows Update

1. Click Start, click All programs, then click Windows Update.
2. If prompted press Continue or provide administrator credentials.
3. In the left pane, click Check for updates.
4. To see if updated drivers are available, click View available updates.
5. Windows Update will list any updated drivers that are available under Optional downloads.
6. If any updates are available, click the driver that you want to install, and the click Install.

Hi Rajeeva.

To start try downloading updated codecs for Windows Media player, and install them onto the new laptop.

Use this link to download updated codes:Free-Codecs.com :: Download latest audio codecs

If that is not enough also update Windows Media Player on the new laptop. Link is below.

Windows Media Player 11.

Updating codecs should fix the problem already.

Sounds like a software/driver issue. Search for updates for your audio drivers (visit the webpage of the company that built your sound card - Creative, Realtek, etc.) and see if you need an update. Updates keep your hardware working with Vista. Also try using a different media player. I haven't heard anything about loss of stereo sound in a player before, but I know Windows Media Player is notorious for annoying pops and clicks during playback, so it's possible.

I bought a new laptop that runs on Vista and

Try plugging the printer in with no drivers and test it. This usually works as most printers do not need installation software because Vista has plug and play capabilities.

If this doesn't work, visit the HP website and choose drivers and software. Find your model number and download the Vista software or plug and play software.

No audio file will play on WMP, no dvd or audio disk will play...

Windows Media Player cannot play several files in the playlist. This might be caused by one or more problems.
To find information about the specific problems, click the Now Playing tab, and then click the blue or red icon next to each file in the List pane.
In some cases, you might encounter this error message if there is a problem with your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller. For example:
  • Your sound device requires an updated driver. To determine if an updated driver is available, see Windows Update or see the sound device manufacturer's Web site.
  • Your sound device is not functioning properly. To troubleshoot the problem, see Windows Help and Support or refer to your sound device's documentation.
  • You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again
