You can run RegClean from Microsoft or try Windows OneCare's online scan to check for any registry problems.

Problems like this are usually caused by a software install that's messed up the registry somewhere. The above may help fix it.

Create Desktop Shutdown/Lock/Restart/Hibernate Shortcut Icons In Vista

1. Right click an empty area of your Desktop
2. Select New>> Shortcut
3. In the text box titled: "Type the location of the item:" Enter the Command for the particular shortcut you would like to create. I've listed all of the commands below that activate their respective shortcut:
Hibernate rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll,SetSuspendState
Lock Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation
Restart Shutdown.exe -r -t 00
Shutdown Shutdown.exe -s -t 00
Sleep rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
4. Once you've entered the command, click "Next"
5. Vista will now ask you what you would like to name your shortcut. I've always just given it the name of its function (EG: Shutdown or Shutdown System).
6. Once you have named you shortcut, click "Finish". Your new shortcut will now reside on your Desktop. Simply double click the icon to activate the command.

Note: If you do not like the look of the "default" icon that Vista has given it, you can change the icon to a different one. Here's how:

1. Right click the shortcut icon
2. Select Properties
3. The shortcut properties window will now be displayed. Click the "Change Icon" button.
4. The "Change Icon" window will now appear. Here, you can select from the many available system icons. Click the icon that you would like to use as your shortcut icon and then click OK.

Your Desktop shortcut icon will now revert to the selected system icon.

That's it! Have fun!

Here's how to create a shutdown shortcut on your desktop

Instead of going to the start menu, choosing shutdown, then waiting for the computer to shut all the programs down, you can create a shortcut on the desktop to do it quickly. You can create a shutdown, restart, or a logoff icon on your desktop which will work a lot quicker than using the usual buttons in the start menu.
Here's how to create a shutdown shortcut on your desktop

1. Go to your blank desktop
2. Right click on a blank space and a menu will appear
3. Choose New from the menu
4. Then choose Shortcut
5. Where it says type the location of the item type in shutdown.exe -s
6. Then press next
7. Now enter a name for your icon. Mine is called SHUTDOWN NOW
8. Press next
9. The Shutdown shortcut will be on your desktop

Different combination you can type in when creating a shortcut to shutdown, restart, or logoff.

Shutdown.exe -s

Shutsdown your computer in 30 seconds and will close all programs and ask you to save all work.

shutdown.exe -r
Restarts your computer in 30 seconds.

shutdown.exe -l
This one will logoff your computer back to the welcome screen where you will need to login again.

shutdown.exe -s -t 1
Shutsdown your computer in one second. the -t 1 tells it how long to wait. (one second in this case) You can put -t 10 or even -t 1120.

shutdown.exe -s -t 15 -c "Goodbye you idiot"
This is my favorite code. It will shutdown in 15 seconds and have a message in the box saying "Goodbye you idiot"
The -c "bla bla bla" stands for a comment.

Notes:

* to stop the computer from shutting down type shutdown /a into the run box located in the start menu..
* -f will force everything to close immediately without asking to save anything.

Will not boot

If you dont have the option to run:
"Windows XP Recovery Console"
You probably have to install windows on a second PHYSICAL drive, Disconnect the failing one first!
Reconnect the failing drive in slave mode.
1. Start/Run "cmd.exe"
2. execute "chkdsk /F /R /X D:"
3. Shutdown
4. Swap drives.
5. Start system (while praying :) )

Have HP mini notebook. everytime im on the

Sounds like spyware / malware i would use an online scanner like Eset or a program like Malwarebytes.

also to stop the computer from restarting open the command prompt window (start menu, click run, type cmd, click ok...) type "shutdown.exe /a" without the "" and there is a space between exe and /a this will abort the shutdown.

Dell model DHM DESKTOP which is stuck while plug in .

Try this out:

1. Hold down the Start (Windows Flag Key) button on your keyboard and press R

2. Type this Command : shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00

This will shutdown all running programs and shutdown windows Instantly.

Optionally you can create a desktop shortcut to do this automatically. Here is how:

1. Right click on any blank space of windows desktop -> New -> Shortcut. A “Create Shortcut” window will open.

2. In the blank, type in:
shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0
It means, shutdown and wait for Zero second. Click “Next” button for next step.

3. Type in whatever name you like in the blank. I use “Turn Off PC”. Then, click “Finish” button.

4. You are finished . A new shutdown shortcut has been created on your windows desktop!

Just click on it to shutdown.
