Recently I kept getting an unreadable disc message on my xbox 360. I took it apart and notice that the disc drive will not spin my game. I acts like it wants to start but it spins hesitantly and then won't spin at all then it get the unreadable disc message. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Dont know if this was just me But this fixxed mine, but I think was my Fault.. I was getting "Open tray Error on all games so Took apart Xbox 360 and DVD drive and Cleaned the LOT, everything, even the Lens with a cotten Bud.. After I put it back together the Disk would Not spin at all.. it did before :( I took thr DVD part again and the centre curcle, where the disks sits to spin. I tried rotate as it would spinning a disk and It was hard, well alittle hard for a finger so impossible for a Drive, after spinning it clockwise afew times it got nice and Loose, was spinning very easy. Put the 360 together again and BAM, Spins perfectly and best of all, NO "open tray error" Yay :) hope this helps
I had the same problem....you need to buy a non flashed dvd drive....go on youtube....look up how to take it apart (if you don't know how)....then see the serial numbers on the dvd drive you have and the type....then buy the same type and numbers on ebay...then the complicated part....there is a chip inside of the dvd drive....you take that chip out with a saudering iron, don't hurt the chip the wires you don't need to worry about because there are new ones on the new dvd drive, afetr you take the chip out you need to sauder it into the new dvd drive and take the chip out of the new dvd drive. The reason for this is the chip is synced with your xbox, so the new chip wont work. So when you take out the new chip and sauder in yours....it should be all set...
Practice on something else if your not good at saudering, or get someone else to do it.
Make sure your saudering gun is a small tip...for the wires are very tiny.
And thats it...Good luck
P.S. I'm buying a PS3 as well...Microsoft has too many ways to screw you....PS=free online, saves a lot in the long run...well worth the 300$

Possibly you tilted or moved the Xbox when a game was running, this will scratch the game beyond repair, or maybe you played the games so long that they were laserburnt, meaning they were burnt from the laser inside of the Xbox that reads it, making they sometimes unplayable, you could try taking the games back to the store and returning them for a new one.
I just found a post on this and it worked for me. My warranty is past. So I took matters in my own hands. I took it apart which was fairly simple cleaned the lens and surrounding areas but it didn't work. But this is what I found out its not reading the disk because the disk isn't spinning. With the box apart and drive open I put it back in the system and turned on the power I noticed the drive would spin slowly I then while the disk was trying to load I spun the disk by hand to help it along and wala it started spinning I powered down put it back together and as of 10:45 2night my gaming nightmare is over. I hope this was helpful. Good luck all!!
Mine had the same problem. On mine the spindle wasn't turning the game. It kept trying to then quit and said "Open Tray". The warranty was out so I took it apart opened the dvd drive and took apart the spindle. The grease in the spindle was black, I guess from all the heat. Cleaned it out and put some high temperature grease on spindle shaft and in the hole. It now spins with ease. There are videos on youtube on how to take apart the xbox and to take apart the dvd drive and spindle. Just pay close attention at how tight the screws the hold the spindle down are.I hope this helps.

the problem is the disc drive.
you have to open it up and put some stick foam " like a sticky strip of foam, insulator : on top of the drive .
the problem is that the disc touches the laser assembly while turning cheating a ring on the disc.
i can fix your games as well as the disc drive if you feel like is to complicated.
Hello there, if you have ever put anything inside your console besides an official game, this will cause some makes of optical drives that ship with the 360 act a little funny. I can only suggest putting in an xbox1 game (preferably one that works), letting it come to whatever resolution it will come to(the console) then trying the hockey game again, repeat this process with different types of disc to see if you can get the optical drive to get back into the mode for that particular game. A lot more is going on than that but that's the short of it.
