Power problem cybershot DSC-S650

My problem is it won't turn on. I have been very careful with my camera. When I turn it on it just shuts off. Any resets for this camera? Should I just get a new one?

My Cyber-shot will turn on but immediately shots off. I've changed the battery but it only marginally improved for a day or two. Now the camera will not turn on regardless of the number of replacement batteries installed...Help!

I've now have an opportunity to complete a home repair on my camera. Since the Cybershot was about 5 years old it was not worth taking too a shop to be repaired. The camera would not work at all I figured what the heck, why not try to fix it myself. I read several comments on this site indicating it maybe a dust or fine dirt problem inside the camera resulting in the mechanisim binding. The recommendations were to slap the camera as hard as you can into the palm of your hand to dislodge the dirt. Surprisingly this worked! The camera now turned on and the lens opened but would not focus properly. As a next step I carefully removed the outer cover of the camera, blew out the interior with my air compressor (a can of compressed air available at most electronic shops will work too) lightly oiled the lens gear mechanisim using DeoxIT and presto, the camera works fine. Total cost of the repair: Approximately $10.00 for the DeoxIT of which I have 99.999% volume remaining. If you need to replace your camera try this before you throw it out. Good Luck.

I still think your problems revolve around dust binding the mechanisim. I't takes extremely little dirt (one or two microscopic pieces to bind the mechanisim) hence the requirement to blow out the lens gears and add a little electronic lubricant. Don't use oil or WD40; electronic lubricant only! I have access to a store that specializes in circuits, switches electonic componets etc. but any store such as "The Source" may carry cleaning fluids and lubricants.

    1) Remove the case cover with a fine Philips screwdriver, being careful to gently unplug the circuit board tape from the camera back as you pull off the case. Once done you have easy access to the lens gears. 2) Clean and lubricate. 3) Plug in the circiut tape to the board but leave the cover off the camera. 4) Turn the camera on and off several time making sure you blow the gears and lubricate them while the lens is moving back and forth. Avoid getting any liquid on the lens face. 5) Assemble the camera.

I had to disassemble and clean mine twice to get it to focus properly. But it was slapping the camera into the palm of my hand so that it would power up that gave me the confidence it was a repairable unit.

A history of my camera symptoms.

    • Bought new about 5 years ago. It was an expensive camera at that time.

    • Worked great for years

    • Lens began to slow down; occassion blury picture.

    • Began eating batteries and with in a week it got so it would turn on and work for a couple of shots only

    • Turned on; opened and immediately shut off and closed

    • Pushing the power buttom the red light came on for a few seconds but nothing else.

    • Final stage of failure. Nothing would happen when pushing the power button.

If you have had some or al of the above symptoms I recommend a good cleaning and lubrication.

    Good luck. Bj

Mine started doing the same thing, in camera mode, it would shut itself off. In review mode it operates fine. But slide it to camera mode and it shuts off. So after reading here about taking it apart, I did. Found no dirt, but manually forced the gear a little that operated the zoom. It seemed to be stuck. I plugged the back cover ribbon cable back in, turned it on, and it works great again. I think the lense front got pushed in during travel and got it stuck. So when it tried to power on and extend out, it shut down. Didn't have nothing to lose, so give it a try if you have the same problem. Saved me from havng to go buy another one.

Wow What happen to me was that i dropped it and now first it turned on but now its not turning on and it shot off immediately too. I think this camera is not good. I m so upset with this because I bought a year ago and now its not working anymore :( . Plus I went to circuit city to see if they could fixed it and they said that probably it will cost about $100. I know its crazy I was like I wont paid that, I rather buy a new one than reapaired it... but maybe you can find a solution try to go to a Sony store and see what they can do, Im going to Sony to see if they can fix mine and how much it will cost... GOOD LUCK!!!

Camera says lens error and shuts down immediately. Lens won't close.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Camera comes on. screen shows OPTIO AND AT BOTTOM V1.01 THATS ALL- none of the funtions work. camera won't shut offf. have to open battery cover to shut off.

If you can get into the menu system, find "reset" in the set-up menu. If not, remove the card and every button....leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.....this is called a "hard reset" and sometimes works.

I hope you have solved this problem if not there is two things that have happened to me one was that I had unlocked the lens and it turned a little which shut off the communications between the camera ad lens. The other is where the gold contacts between the camera and lens became slightly dirty with a hazy this is easily fixed with a DIY. using a pencil eraser gently polish the contacts between the camera and lens both sets of contacts, be careful not to get dirt into the camera or lens when you are doing this. Don't use a puffer or any air.

Camera shuts down when 'zoom lens' is used.

Hi there please follow the steps and let me know the result.

1. Ensure batteries are fully charged & clean the battery connector point in side the battery compartment.

2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand, dirt or any damaged etc.

3. Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck

4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 5 minutes and refit the battery only.

5. Now turn on camera( with out card ) and see ,if working then fix the memory card & again turn on the camera. If working then fine .
Otherwise format the memory card and fix back in camera again & try. Make sure before format the memory card take a
back up all photos in your computer then format. If no luck then reset or restore the camera setting by pressing Menu key for 2 sec ..
in not done the press both Menu & self time key for 2 - 4 sec.

GE A730 camera cuts off

Hi doctech:
Turn on the camera, then go to the menu and set the time to shut off to 5 or 10 min. These settings are usually set to 2 min. or less. This setting is to let the camera "go to sleep" or simply shut down to save battery power.

You can also try the following:
Go to the set up menu, find the RESET ALL and reset all the settings to factory.
Then go back to the setup menu and set the setting as you want them making sure to set the shut off time to more than 2 min.
