Ok...do you have the install CD around? Slip that into the cd/dvd reader, and restart. The system should read that, and ask to reinstall your o/s. Hopefully, your data is still good on your hard drive.

The hard drive may be going bad. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if it boots into Windows. Then I highly recommend backing up all documents onto a flash drive or portable hard drive.

Underscore

Since when you are facing this problem, did you make any recent hardware or software changes ?
And after you turn on your laptop, don't you see anything after that cursor(Underscore) blinking ?
I mean it boots to windows or not ?

If not try to remove your battery and keep it aside for 5 Mins. and then connect it again. Then try to turn on the laptop

Black screen when switched on

Okay, does that laptop post to bios first? Example: You see the logo of the company before it goes to a black screen.
Also, do you see a blinking underscore in the top left hand corner?

Asus eee pc not booting

Try to go to BIOS and run a HDD test.

To Go to BIOS turn on the NoteBook and Keep Pressing F2 and you will enter the BIOS set up.
Search for Hard Drive Test Option from the Menus
If the Test Passes then you need to Reload the Windows OS or if the Test Fails you need to get a New HDD

Dell Inspiron 6000 turns on but does nothing else.

From the description the hard drive has failed or windows has corrupt files. Unplug power supply from laptop and remove main battery, press and hold power for 2 minutes to remove residual voltage. when finished install battery and power supply now power up.

Blank screen blinking underscore Toshiba laptop after startup

if you can get into the BIOS-setup, verify if your hard drive is recognised as a bootable device and set as first boot device. if the disk is not recognised, you might want to verify if the P-ATA/S-ATA controllers are enabled. if this is all the case, but the problem remains, then your hard disk is probably broken.

Need to restore to factory default but my lappy gives me a blank black screen with a blinking underscore on the top left of the screen.

There might be one step you could try to restore the system to factory specifications. When you turn the laptop on, and you see the Acer splash screen, press the Alt-F10 keys together at the same time, and this should hopefully bring the Acer eRecovery system up, provided that your computer has the built-in recovery partition. If it asks for a password, try using the default of "000000". If that doesn't work, then a password has been entered into the system, and there is no way to reset it, however there is a way to find out what the password is, however it does require the use of the Ubuntu Operating System (which is free to download, here)

the next time you reboot keep on tapping the f8 key. it should bring you to the advanced options menu. from there select the option for last known good configuration. select it. if this doesnt remedy the issue you may have to reinstall windows.
