Garmin Nuvi 650

When powered on, the unit turns itself off after a few seconds of operation. Battery is about 1/4 charged, but does not seem to be taking additional charging. Any ideas? Many thanks

Just got a Garmin nuvi 650 and it has exactly the same issue. I haven't charged it yet (it came charged) but it indicates that it has about a quarter of the battery left. It turns off after a few seconds of operation.

The unit shuts down between 5 seconds and 45 seconds of use. This occurs when the unit is connected to the power cord or is being used by battery power. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem with both of my Forerunner 201's. The battery does not seem to be holding a charge. It charges but when I unplug it and turn it on, it advises battery low and then shuts off. Any suggestions on fixing this problem?

I bought a Garmin NĂ¼vi 650 in November 2007. It worked okay untill April 08. I did not use it for a month or so and when I tried to use it it turns off after few seconds it turns on.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2008

I am also having the same issue. I received my Garmin Nuvi 360 about 2 months ago and even when the battery is fully charged, I can turn on the unit and depending on how touchy it is acting, it may turn off as soon as I turn it on or it may boot up all the way and let me search for an address, and then it shuts off. I'm calling Garmin on Monday to see if they've heard of this issue. The unit if fully charged now -- I have 4 green battery bars. Since the unit has no other buttons, I don't know what else to try.

Same exact problem here as well!

  • jgarru1 Dec 17, 2008

Same problem here. Have had the unit for 1 year with no problem until now. This is an overnight problem. All the sudden the unit won't stay on and 1/4 battery charge.

  • backhertz Dec 25, 2008

My unit has the same problem. I found the unit will take a full charge when plugged into the USB port of my laptop. But when plugged inthe car, the unit is not being powered, but rather runs off the battery for 3 hours & then

won't stay on for more than 5 seconds.

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2009

I'm having the same problem on the nuvi 650 model. It does have some battery charge still on it, but it will not stay on for more than 5 seconds, even if there is a power source directly plugged into it.

    Frustrating!

SOURCE: Charging Garmin Nuvi battery for first time

The Garmin Nuvi 855 uses a Lithium-ion battery. It is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge.

In other words there is no memory effect with these batteries and it should be safe to charge it for as long as you like on the first charge. I would estimate 4 hours will give you a full charge if you wish to do this from the outset.

SOURCE: I have a Garmin Nuvi

I had the same issue on my 1450 except it just would not power on anymore, even with a full charge. A soft reset will preserve your Home, Favorites, POis, etc. Leave the battery in the unit. Hold down on the lower right of the screen while holding down on the power button. After 20-30 seconds, you should see the Garmin splash screen. Have your PC/laptop ready with USB cable. Get the latest Map update downloaded and installed or just start using the unit again.

MY GARMIN RESPONDS BUT JUST SHUTS DOWN AFTER IT WORKS JUST A BIT ANY ANSWERS?

The battery seems to be weak and is not holding a charge so the little strength it has is what it uses to power it up to the extent where it works a little and goes off.

First reset the unit before you carry out some tests, to reset the unit, you need to charge the device for about 2 hours before powering it on, then you press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to see if it will still do the same. If it does, then you need to carry out some tests on the battery, the charger and the device itself.

Try to charge the gps device for about 2 hours then try to turn it on. If it does not come on, then it means the battery did not get charged. That can be a problem from either the battery or the charger or the charging port.

First test the battery by fixing it in another gps and charging it for about 2 hours then turn it on. If it powers on the gps, then it means the battery is okay, but if it does not turn it on, then it means the battery is weak and cannot hold a charge and the solution is for you to replace the battery.

Next you test the charger by trying it out on another gps device, if it turns it on, then it means the charger is intact but if it does not turn it on, then the fault is from the charger.

Finally, test the gps itself by trying to charge in by connecting it to the computer using the USB cable, then you turn it on, if it does not come on, then it means there is a problem with the connection port or there is an internal problem or something with the unit.

Hope this advice was useful to you.

The power off

  1. Make sure you are sliding the power button all the way to the left.
    • If the unit does not respond, it may be that the battery is not charged.
  2. Connect the nuvi to a power source such as the USB cable and your computer.
  3. Reset the device, if the problem persists, by sliding the power button to the left and holding it in that position for 10 seconds
    • This resets the unit and prompts it to power on.
  4. Contact Garmin Support if this does not solve your problem at www.garmin.com

Do not open the nuvi, the garmin site recommends the following method instead:

    • This resets the unit and prompts it to power on
If this fails to solve the problem, contact "SUPPORT" at www.garmin.com.

I had this problem. The problem turned out to be my car charger. Hooking the GPS up to my computer allowed it to charge and operate normally. A new car adapter might fix you right up.

Do you have the Garmin approved charger / car charger?? You may have to send your GPS in for battery replacement or try this:
There are three ways to charge the internal battery in your automotive GPS unit.1
  1. Use the provided vehicle power cable that came with your GPS unit. The unit will charge while powered on and using the device as well as when the GPS unit is powered off and plugged into a running vehicle. About 3 hrs for a full charge. If the unit will not charge in the vehicle, check the fuse in the power cable for the unit and the power outlet in the vehicle.
  2. Use an AC power adaptor. Some units come with this power cable to plug the GPS unit into a wall outlet allowing the GPS unit to take a charge. For units that do not come with this cable, one can be purchased from Garmin's online store.
  3. For most units, the final way of charging the battery is to plug the GPS into a powered on computer with a USB cable2. This method of charging will be a trickle charge and it may take longer (like a full day) than the other two options, however it will still charge the battery. A USB cable is provided with a few GPS models. For those that don't come with this cable, one can either be ordered from the online store or you can use a standard USB to mini-USB cable that fits the unit and plugs into your computer.
1 - Please note that temperature can play an effect on the charging of a device. If the battery registers a temperature of 0°C and below or 45°C and above (32°F and 113°F respectively) then it will not charge. When connected to external power it will only be operating off of external power.
2 - The Quest® and Quest® 2 will not charge using a USB cable.

2 Garmins, BOTH shut off right after they are turned on

Waking up your c330...

If you left your Garmin c330 on running the battery will have 1% life left. If you turn c330 back on again, it will flash screen for 3 seconds then die, even charging it at this point will not wake it back up. TO BRING IT BACK TO LIFE... plug in the power home or car into Garmin c330. There is a tab in the front Garmin gray frame of your screen. You must take like your fingernails and under the logo "GARMIN" pull the whole gray plastic frame off. Underneath the plastic frame to the right hand side. There is a "RESET" button. Make sure power is plugged in while hitting reset. Your battery should come back to life. Cheers

Garmin Nuvi shuts itself off after only seconds during navigation

Is the battery charged? What does the battery indicator say? If you are using it in the car, is the power cord connected and working properly? If it is working correctly, you should see a lightning bolt symbol over the battery bar graph showing that it is connected to an external power source and that it is charging.
