I have the same problem. I just bought mine used and they said it worked great. The CD player has power and the cassette has power but the turntable won't turn. I don't know if I am supposed to flip a switch or if it is just supposed to start automatically when I move the needle over it. Help please?

Oh I know exactly what you mean! I took mine to the repair shop and he laughed at me for not realizing that I must gently pull the arm and needle to the right to start the turntable. Then gently move the arm to rest on the album. Write back if this works for you!

What you need to do is look at the cartridge it fits in. It should have a make and model number on it. Put them into a Google search and the cartridge and Stylus should come up.

The arm with the needle slides across the LP record - doesn't pick up sound

This is often a problem when you are using a 78 needle on a 45 or 33 record. Some needles can be flipped, so check to see if yours is able to flip between the 78 and 33 setting. If not, you may simply need a new one.

Philco american stereo system

Well since we in the UK use 240 volts and over the sea they use 120 volts, it should be no surprise why it no longer works. What the effect is couldn't be any clearer. Since most units only use around 30 volts to work, a transformer is employed to knock the mains down. These have what is known as a primary winding, this takes the mains, however the coil of wire will be designed for the mains it is going to be connected with. If it is connected to one greater they tend to burnt out. Often transformers have fuses built. However they don't tend to be replacable. So you will almost for certain need a new transformer. If you are really lucky a fuse might have been employed in the power leads going to the transformer. As long as it wasn't rated a 250 volts it could have gone and transformer is OK. BUT I WOULDN'T BANK ON IT!
Now you have an option, you could replace the transformer with the same type (which you would need to do for safety reasons) or you can get a very experinced technical person, to replace the transformer with one that will meet safety standards and have a 250 volt primary, for the UK. You can even get them that have two mains, one 250 and one 120!
If you just go for the replacement then you will still need a mains adapter.
PS There might be other damage, such as the mains switch!

Power supply

This unit takes a 12V 0.5A DC power supply. Your local Radio Shack sells this type of supply that will plug into the wall. You'll need to make sure that the other end will plug into the turntable, but for the supply, Radio Shack is probably the quickest way.
