Fridge problem I have a 5 year old Hotpoint. Freezer on top. Freezer and ice maker working fine. Firdge is not getting cold and food is spoiling. What do I need to look for? I don't have a book on it, fridge came with the house when it was built and no paperwork was left for it. Thanks.

This answer has nothing to do with my problem. The problem is the fridge, not the freezer. And I did check - there is no build up on anything anywhere inside the freezer or fridge. It soulds like the thermostat to the fridge - is there a separate thermostat to the fridge than the freezer? Can I buy one and replace it myself or do I need a tech? Where would I even look at to find the thermostat? Thanks.

My hotpoint refrigerator is not cold inside and thermostat does not seem to work. Freezer is fine. A kid used to keep the door open.

do you hear a fan running in the freezer if the thermostat was the promblem the whole unit would be thawed do you hear a fan running when you open the freezer door

  • robert samples May 11, 2010

well first off as master tech said the freezer does all the cooling for the whole unit there is nothing in the bottom that cools the hot air is drawn up from the bottom and through the evaporator in the freezer chilled then blown down through the discharge vent to the bottom three things on that model will stop this defrost problem, frozen drain in the freezer,or the freezer fan not running

I don't know about the hot points for sure, but all the maytags (I used to work for maytag) have a damper valve in the air tunnel that feeds cold air to the refrigerator. If the damper went bad, it would block cold air flow into the refrigerator. (assuming this model has a damper)

Hotpoint CTF15ELD top freezer refrigerator - freezer O.K. refrig too warm

It's likely the door was inadvertently left open, and the cold air passages from the freezer have built up enough ice that the cold air from the freezer has no way to enter the refrigerator. Check the cealing of the refrigerator. If you can see or feel ice in the passages between the freezer and fridge, you can probably solve the problem by finding a safe temporary home for your food, and leaving the refrigerator unplugged overnight.

Fridge is not cold enough, freezer is working fine, but has frost

Just had the same problem with my side-by-side.

In my case, the solution was to empty the freezer side, to access a back panel INSIDE the freezer covering the fan and cooling coils. Two screws held the back panel cover on, and when I removed the panel cover I found the cooling coils to be totally iced up, preventing the flow of cold air into the fridge side. I left the freezer open for a few hours until all the ice was melted, before replacing the inside panel. (I used a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting).

Everything's working fine now for me - good luck with yours!

Whirlpool fridge with top freezer.( no ice maker )

check if you have frost build up at the back side of the freezer section.

if you do, then it is a defrosting problem.

you could have a problem with the defrost timer, the defrost heater , or the bi-metal.

if there is no frost accumulation, that would be something more and you have to elaborate on what you observe with the unit to help me further troubleshoot your unit.

Refrigerator will not stay cold

Bought a second hand fridge that was running well. We layed the fridge on it's side for moving and let it stand upright for at least 4 hours. The moving was only 45 minutes. The freezer is semi-cold but the main body of the fridge stays at aprox. 68 degrees. Any solutions.

Freezer works but refridgerator warm

you could find ice behind the back panel - worth a check. however the problem is probably ice in the return vent from fridge to freezer and the only way to cure is to switch off and leave for a day with doors open. if im right and you try this, if it re-occurs you may have a problem with the defrost system

Freezer works fine but the fridge won't get cold

It sounds like cold air from the freezer isn't making it to the fridge compartment. This can be cause by a several things. The damper that lets air into the fresh food side is stuck in "closed" position, the temp sensor (t-stat) isn't working properly, the evaporator fan (in the freezer comp above the coils) isn't working to blow air up to the fresh food section. In some situations, the defrost cycle for the freezer section isn't working and the coils have frozen into a block of ice and air can't flow over them properly so you get not cold air to the fresh food section but the freezer still stays cold due to the block of ice.
