Question about Sony FD Trinitron WEGA XBRKV-40XBR800 40" TV
My Sony kv-40xbr800 won't turn on, then the LED on the front bezel blinks repeatedly 6 times (once in a while it blinks 7 times after attempting to turn the set on.) When it is starting it makes a popping noise right as the audio starts to kick in.
I've tried unplugging it for a minute to a few hours, that doesn't help.
It will turn on normally if you let it sit for a long time. We have been just leaving it on and it works fine. But, every once in a while we forget that it is broken and turn it off. It takes a few days of trying then it works again.
Otherwise it works fine.
There are two large electrolytic caps on the D board located on the same side as the hv xformer.
both caps are 1200ufd at 250v, replace C6503, it is futher away from the side of the pcb.
this is the part of the ac rectifier that feed IC6501 chip MZ3001D
cap size is 1 1/8" diameter and about 2" inches high.
my problem with 6 or 7 blinks, would go away temporarily after the tv was unplugged for 24 hours.
i verified the fix by attaching a 250ufd at 250v cap in parallel with the C6503.
the problem was corrected.
you must assume the cap is leaking, which leads to the intermittent failure.
parts and shipping are a killer, so i turned to ebay.
search ebay for "Electrolytic Capacitors, 1200 uF, 250 Volt, Snap in 2X".
as the only bidder, i picked up two caps for $3.99 + $3.50 s&h.
might be wise to replace both caps, C6503 and C6590.

My tv kept getting 6 blinking lights and sometimes 4 and 7 blinking lights. So I first changed IC504 (5v reg) and the caps near it C530 and C540. It turned on a couple of times and then it stopped again within 24 hours. then I changed IC5001 AND IC 5002. still no luck. then changed C6503 AND C6590 capacitors with (1500micro f 250V because local store did not have 1200micro f 250V) they were a bit bigger and did not fit so I used 16 awg copper wire and made about 1inch legs so they would reach. I also changed C6546 becuase I saw that black goo on it and firgured it wouldn't hurt to change. still no luck. Then I changed IC6501 with a spare I had that did not work. I replaced the original ic6501 and took my spare placed it in ic8002 and the tv turned on. It still is less than 24 hours but it is on. I am going to order two new IC6501 AND IC8002 and replace both and hopefully it will last. any questions or suggestions feel free to contact me at email@example.com. even if it is a long time from now I do not mind helping. Thanks everyone else for your help in figuring out a solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Toss the Sony set and purchase a Panasonic Plasma. I have the same set with the exact same problem. Was told by a local repair shop that the high voltage module was to blame and that it is obsolete. I called the Sony repair center and they confirmed that the module was obsolete, but they can repair it for between $500 and $700. I set up an appointment with the technician and he canceled the appointment and never followed up to schedule another appointment.
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY TELEVISION AGAIN!
