The unit will run for several seconds, then shutdown. I have to reset the clock and then it will do the same thing. This will continue to occur, then randomly the unit will run fine and then start acting up again
.
Sadly, we hear of this over and over.
This is usually due to a defective or loose magnetron causing electrical interference and disruption in the control circuit board.
If your magnetron was recently replaced, it may have loose mounting nuts or bolts or the wire mesh RF gasket was not installed or got pinched.
It may also need a new high-voltage diode and stirrer, and the cavity may be affected.
GE had a campaign (but not a recall, mind you!) covering several models.
Details are in their bulletin at http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_mw_mag_kit_bulletin.pdf
Even if your model is not on the list, the same problem can occur, requiring a kit. I just think the difference is that GE has stopped paying for the repairs.
The parts kit (that GE used to pay for) is part # WB27X10489 and is shown here: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/wb27x10489_ge_mag_stir_kit.jpg
If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383
There should also be a very helpful "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel. It's very helpful when troubleshooting.
We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

The micro-controller is defective or is detecting a overheat in the magnetron valve or in the microwave cavity.

Hi,
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, a door switch might have failed intermittently. Check each of the door switches for any signs of overheating, arcing, or burning. Also check each of them for continuity. Replace any of the switches that is visibly damaged or that only has continuity intermittently
If
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops there may be a short
circuit in the main control board. Check other components first,
these boards are often misdiagnosed.
If
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad and
control panel might be defective. There are several other components
that can cause this problem, be sure to check any other components
before replacing this board.
If
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad might be
at fault. This is not common. Generally speaking, if the microwave
display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but
some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.
If
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the high voltage
transformer might have an intermittent short. This is not common.
Check other components related to the microwave symptom first.
If
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the thermostat might
be defective. Watch our video on testing thermostat

I am having the same problem but know the unit is dead! Got to love
GE
GE Spacemaker JVM1650CH02 Runs OK then randomly shuts down, must reset the clock and date, three years old?!? What can be done to fix it?
Thanks
We have the same problem -- the microwave runs for three seconds then completely resets, requiring us to reset the time and date. It does not do this all the time, but it is becoming more and more frequent. We bought our microwave new from Lowe's in the spring of 2005, so it is less than three years old.
The link below shows discusses only units manufactured between April 1999 and July 2000. Ours was manufactured in January 2005. Was this still a common problem for that long even after GE recognized it? Is the cost to make these repairs reasonable compared to the cost of a new unit (from another manufacturer for sure)?
Yes, my 2005 JVM1430BD does a similar thing....after 5-10 seconds..it shuts off..I reset the clock..and it may 'work' OR it may quit again.
The light in the control panel 'flickers' too...
We have the EXACT same problem on a JVM1650 that was mfg in Nov 2004. Was a rare occurrence, then more frequent. Now it has done it roughly 12 times in a row. The thing just will not work more than 2 or 3 seconds.
Having this problem also. It runs for three seconds and shuts off. Service man said it would be $150.00 plus s/h plus labor. Not worth it. John C.
