okay i loaded the bios defaults and set it up to boot from the cd rom first. still the same thing. i can feel the system reading the disk and the lights on like it is doing it. i also reseated my hard drive. no change, i was thinking it was my hard drive but i have quickplay just hit dvd or music when powered off and the system starts up in quickplay but i cant get access to my system from the quickplay interface.

when i changed the boot order and restarted it gave me a screen to choose what order to boot in so i chose cd rom and it restarted like normal and went to read the cd but stalled for a while, black screen blinking cursor, then same error.

at this point the data on the drive is an acceptable lose. i just need it up and running again. i know how to work from the command prompt. but i can not get to it. the only thing i can go into is bios but there is no system restore or anything to that effect.

when you tried to boot to the cdrom, were you able to pull up the windows setup page?

  • dennis joel golez Feb 18, 2008

take your hdd drive out of your computer, while you have no hdd, try to boot from the os cd, if you are not even able to get to the welcome to windows etup page, better run a full diags on your mobo, if you are able to get to the welcome to windows etup page(on cd boot), try connecting your hdd to another computer as a slave drive. If still could nopt get detected on another computer, replace the hdd. If detected on another computer, then, fdisk it.

Shut your computer off and when you boot it back up tap f8. keep tapping it and it will take you into setup in there you can go to last good known setting, or try to start in safe mode with command prompt if you are familiar with that. command prompt is a powerful tool if you can use it. hope this helps hp does have a partition that has the recovery console already installed. if you are ready to lose data(if you have no backup} i believe if you restart your system as it starts booting up hit f10 key and that should take to the option of system restore. or system recovery. try system restore first and choose a date to restore from. then the later that will cause your computer to go back to factory settings.Hope this helps some.

Dear azzopardin

Please note that your HDD is having your important data. If you are ready for loosing the data, or lready lost the data. Try for restoring from restore Disk. If same thing continues Please change Hard drive. Hope this will solve your problem.

Most likely the hard drive is failing, run diagnostics on the hard drive if you have a resource CD. Or you can download them from support.dell.com

Just bought a used dell alienware m15 laptop. I7 intel core I turned it on once... and it booted extremely slow!!!! Than it would not open any apps... or reall do anything besides move the cursor around...

I would do a complete operating system reinstall.
The M15x uses a program called Dell Datasafe Local Backup for factory restores. You can access this program from launching the application from within Windows (it is on the Start Menu), or by using the F8 Windows Boot Options menu. Press F8 after the iniital POST screen (Alien Face), but before you see the Windows logo on the screen. There should be an option to repair Windows, which will launch you into a recovery mode that allows you to restore the system. This option is available even if you have uninstalled the Dell DataSafe Local Backup app from Windows (I did, as its constant polling causes stutterin in Blu-Ray playback). Good luck!

Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart error

Is it a black screen right when you boot your computer? If so this could be a fatal disk error and the harddrive has crashed.

There is no easy fix other than to replace the harddrive.

A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

Since the bios hard drive test passed , ujr hard drive is ok and mostly all ur data is ok . Only windows went corrupt (normally it doest when u turn off that way ) reinstall it dont use the recovery disks , but use a windows installation cd to re-install windows , but take care that when u install ,install on a different partition and remember to take the option leave the current partition intact without changes , so that none of ur data is disturbed.

Problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.
