Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Hey Folks -
I seem to have the ubiquitous and seemingly generic PS3 power up problem. When I press the I/O button, the unit fan comes on and all seem "well". After 1-2 seconds, the unit beeps quickly 3 times and then red LED flashes. If I press the I/O button again, the LED goes solid RED. If I press again, the same power issue.
Is there a way to focus on the exact problem (HD, RAM, CPU, G-CPU, cables, etc.)?
There seems to be any solutions to this issue (bad heat transfer goop on the G-CPU, power supplies, etc.).
* If I open the unit to look inside for obvious issues, will Sony still fix the unit if I have to send it to them (for $150)?
* I bought this used on Ebay...thus I'm sure my warranty is non-existent. Right?
Not a solution as such, but I have had the same issue, replaced HDD with aftermarket and original PS3 drives, replaced PSU with replacement original and Hong Kong variants, tried different Blue Ray drive in there added new Silver based Thermal paste to CPU cores, double checked the Fan in a second PS3, even tried with and without a card reader (last ditch attempt). All failed to fix the red led issue, and all the components are tested working, the only thing left is the main board, which has to be the only component left at fault.
My console was a gen 1 , and was well passed warranty, if yours is also out of warranty, successful repairs are Hard Drives and Power Supplies, I have seen console come back with these fixes. If you can fix it with either of these, good for you, these are reasonable costing components that are worth a try, and are sell-able if not successful. After this point, its not worth throwing anymore money at it.
Part it up and sell it, buy another console...I did

If you open the unit, you can forget any chance of a warranty return.
Heres what i,d Do:- find a friend thats just recently bought a PS3.
Ask for his Warranty Card, return the Unit to Sony or the repair centre. your dealing with serious issues here mike.
these are too new, to go playing lets open the case up.
Unless your a real PCB electronics specialist ( which i,m certainly Not ) don,t waste your time.
3 beeps-red lights could be Overheating, hard disk errors, Bios fault if they have 1.

I have the same problem that you are talking about. It happens when i try to turn it on or eject. I believe its a disc jam or something similar. I shot sony customer service an email and am waiting for a response. It seems that is mostly happening with the 60 gig systems.

If it wont come on without the hard drive then the CPU is probably fried. no fix for fried CPU

Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
