Question about Kenmore 53301 Dehumidifier

1 Answer

No water in bucket

We just bought this new dehumidifier after leaks came into house due to ice damming. Have been running it for 2 days and thus far not a drop of water has appeared in the bucket. Is this because it's winter and too dry? Or did we buy a bum unit? Is there any way to test the dehumidifier other than simply running it normally? We put a bowl of water and a wet towel near the unit--still, no water has appeared in the bucket and the wet towel is still a little damp after 24 hours. Thank you!

Possible that the cooling fins have frosted over...this happens when a cold surface appears in a humid room that does not have enough heat to prevent the freeze-up on the fins. If you look at the fins (above the water bucket), you may see the frost. One solution is to turn up heat in room, followed by placing a fan to blow air through fins if still frosted. If you do not have a frost problem, then ensure compressor is running. If comp is running, then return dead unit.

Why does compressor continue running, even with dehumidifier turned off?

Hello Bernard, thank you for your post!
I see that you are experiencing an issue with the Frigidaire dehumidifier, FAD704DWD, compressor consistently being on. This could be a possible issue with your control panel or sensor. Since it could be any one of these underlying issues I would suggest contacting the manufacturer for further assistance. Hopefully this information is helpful to you. -Matt

Why does Frigidaire dehumidifier LAD704DUL has ice on the coils?

Hello Friend, thank you for your question!

I see that you have frost accumulating on the coils of your Frigidaire dehumidifier, LAD704DUL. Typically frost appears on coils either because your dehumidifier has been turned on recently or the room temperature is too low. Sometimes this is normal due to refrigerant rushing through the coils and usually it disappears within 60 minutes. However, if your dehumidifier is not removing moisture, then at this point your dehumidifier may possibly been experiencing a sealed system issue. Is your appliance still in warranty? If so, you might want to reach out directly to the manufacturer to determine the coverage on your dehumidifier and the procedures to any potential remedy in that regard. Hope this helps! - Z

Moisture collecting at the top front when running, even at mid power, over the control panel, sometimes turns to ice. if I shut it off when it is doing this the problem stops for awhile

Well, sounds like you have a good cold section in the dehumidifier-- that is good!-- But I agree-- we don't want water condensing on the surface-- and we surely don't need it turning to ice!
A couple questions to help us get to the next level of trouble shooting this problem:
1.) How cold is the room you are running the dehumidifier in?
(Obviously-- the warmer a room is, the easier to remove moisture--
the colder the room, the easier to drop the air temperature well below the freezing point-- making ice.)

2.) Have the air filters been cleaned/changed recently?
A dehumidifier needs a steady fast moving supply of air across its whole condenser/evaporator surface, in order to remove the maximum amount of water from the air, and not freeze up. (I would winder if something isn't blocking the flow of air toward the top of the coil?-- so that the coil in that area is going well below freezing temperatures, and thus allowing water (or ICE!) to develop near the top of the coil?-- Can you check air flow for us?

3.) You have suggested a good solution,-- especially if the above problems can not be easily corrected: Turn off the unit every few hours, and allow the warmth of the room, to defrost the coil....
In fact-- just to make sure that the air flow is not being restricted by ice deep within the coil-- let it stay off over night-- or bring the dehumidifier into a much warmer room, to make sure no ice is still blocking air flow deep within the coil..

Let us know what you learn about air flow, and get back with us-- THen maybe we need to take the trouble shooting deeper insicde the device.

I hope this helps-- MB

Hi,

This one has a leak in the refrigerant system... it will need to be found, fixed, and recharged...which will cost more then a new one...in most cases.

Ice forming on the to

Usually this happens for one of two reasons: 1) there is a problem with the refrigerant and/or compressor (like a little leak of refrigerant)
2) the room that the compressor is in is too cool (below the operating range of the dehumidifier)

If the unit is under warranty, call for service if you know the room is above the minimum operating temp. If it is a problem with the refrigerant, they will probably replace the unit.

I hope this helps.

(we have an LG dehumidifier and had to have it replaced when it was less than a year old - it was icing up in the summer. It still iced up in the winter (at times due to cold in the basement).)

I just bought this and it keeps leaking, why?

If the room tempature is close to 60, the coils may be frozen (completely encased in ice). If this is the case, move it where the water can drain off - about 1 gallon which may NOT run into the drain bucket.
I out mine over the floor drain.
Turn off and it will defost over night.
Only specially made dehumidifers work below a room temo of 60 degrees (the temp of a basement in winter).
Does it need to be running? A digital humidity sensot from Radio Shack is cheap and may tell you the humidity is OK - only 50% or less.
