If you look at the diagram ( zoom in) part #94 , idler spring, is what puts tension on the belt.

Hi Andy, the carby will need to be removed and all jets cleaned out with compressed air. Basically its not getting enough fuel through the carby to keep running. Regards Phil.

I just replaced the belt on my 44" Trailmower and since I had to get it up and running without waiting for new Swisher 4220 belt I found an ordinary V-belt 1/2"X72" whith overall with of 74" works OK

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A USED SWISHER FOR $700 13.5 HP 60 INCH I BELIEVE THE MODEL IS 1340D? I'M HOPING I DIDN'T GET RIPPED OFF AND THIS IS SOMETHING SIMPLE..I THINK THAT'S THE MODEL NUMBER I'M NOT EXACTLY SURE THE STAMP O N THE SIDE ISN'T TO LEGIBLE , ANYWAY WHEN I SPRAY STARTING FLUID INTO THE AIR FILTER IT RUNS BUT THEN STOPS. IT HAS A NEW BATTERY, FUEL LINE AND FILTER AND I JUST TOOK THE CARBURETOR OFF AND SPRAYED IT OUT WITH GUNK CLEANER TO NO AVAIL. THE FLOAT BOWL WAS REALLY CRUDDY. I'M WONDERING WHERE I CAN GET A NEW CARB? ARE THEY AVAILABLE? IF SO WHERE? THANKS

Here's the manual for it - section 12 belt replacement, page 16. It goes over all pulleys except the idler - it goes under the idler pulley.

Pull the belt cover off on the side of the engage lever and you will see that it is not a wire cable that engages the idler pulley. It's a rod connected to a long spring. Perhaps the spring came off or is defective as it puts tension on the idler pulley against the drive belt when you engage the blades. Further, there is a return spring to pull the idler pulley away from the drive belt when you disengage the blades. Check all the connections for the springs and see that the engage lever is mounted tightly. Also check the idler pulley itself.

take the cover off above the ignition switch ckeck 4 loose wires if nothing is found wrong jump it at the selinoid if it starts go to the nearest perts store and buy a selinoid for an ole ford truck transfer wire exact and it should wrk fine
