I have a sharp vc-h996 vcr and i use it to record with my cameras. but the problem is that it is on sp and only records for 2 hours and i have a 6 hour tape i need to change it to ep i thinks thats what its called and i dont have the remote. ive tried to go to menu but dont see anything to do with it please someone help me its driving me nuts. thanx
Most later model VCRs NEED the original remote to get all the functions. None of the budget models support many of the available features from the front panel of the machine to save money. Universal remotes may support enough of the functions for you to be able to change the speed, but you will have to try them to see, as this feature support varies from brand to brand. They don't replace the original by any means. This problem is a product of the Walmart pricing philosophy. Cheaper is better.

When you press record, does the tape eject? if it does, make sure the safety tab is intact. if not, put a piece of scotch tape over the hole.
Do you hit the record button on the vcr or a universal remote? On a remote, you may have to hit recort 2 times.
do you have cable? if yes both tv and vcr should be on ch #3 (to record).......ok no cable you are already set up look at tv right....just need to record..you need your vcr remote.....turn on vcr...press the menu...go to ch settings..auto scan will look for and lock in your channels...also make sure the air/cable selection is on air (unless connected to cable)....hope this helpful....feel free to rate
it will automatically play at the speed the tape was recorded at. but if you want to change record speeds here's how: you should be able to access menu functions from the front of the vcr, if so, put a tape to be recorded into the unit and then set the timer for a couple of minutes.while you are on the timer menu it will ask you for recording speed. set the timer record speed to ep and let it record for two minutes and let it record for the full time untill it stops recording. the record speed will automatically change settings to whatever you used last on timer record.
You need to have an antenna in (from TV antenna or cable). Set the VCR to that channel and press RECORD. Or use the on screen menu to set up the recording time/channel
You really need to have a manual to find the step by step instructions for your VCR. Go to this website and search
for a VCR manual from Sharp. I was there and did not find the exact manual.Download a couple of ones that have similar model numbers and follow the process.
