What to check when your dryer won't start-

The wall outlet 240 volts:
The first thing to check when your Whirlpool dryer is not starting is the wall outlet to make sure that the dryer is getting the proper voltages. On an electric dryer there should be 240 and 120 volts present at the terminal block.

A blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker are one of the major causes why the dryer won't start. To check the voltage on an electric dryer you will need to use a multimeter.

The wall outlet 120 volts:
A gas dryer connects to a 120 volts wall outlet, and it is very easy to check the outlet. Disconnect the dryer and connect a hair blower or any other small appliance on the outlet.

If they work, then the problem must be on the dryer. If the don't work, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. If the problem is bigger than that, have a license electrician check the house wiring. A bad wall outlet could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not starting.

The thermal fuse:
The thermal fuse is use on an electric dryer as a safety devise to open the motor circuit if the operating thermostat fails to open at the preset temperature or if the motor draws too much amperage.

A blown thermal fuse could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not starting. It is located behind the back panel on the dryer.

The door switch:
The door switch is another safety device use on the dryer. It is connected on the neutral line of the motor circuit. A door that is not closing properly or a bad door switch could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not starting.

The push to start switch:
The push to start switch is use to start the motor. There are two types of switches. The older type switch is a solenoid operated door switch and the other one is a simple push to start switch.

A bad solenoid operated or regular push to start switch could be the cause why your Whirlpool dryer is not starting.

The timer:
The timer is the distribution center or the brain of the dryer. Inside of the timer is that the electricity gets routed to the different electrical parts in the dryer.

The timer has contact points, and the contact points wear or burn out depending on the amount of use. Contacts burnt inside of the timer, could prevent the dryer motor from starting..

The motor:
Also, the motor could be burnt bad. A motor that smells like rubber burning, makes growling noises, runs for a wile, the won't start until is cool down or a motor that runs fine, but the centrifugal switch is not making the right connections is a bad motor and must be replace.

So...as you could see, there are many parts that could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not starting.

    1.The terminal block:

This is a live test to see if the dryer is getting the needed 120/240 volts necessary to work properly. Do not work alone when doing this test, have someone to plug and unplug the dryer from the wall outlet for you, while you check the voltage .

These are the readings that you should get.

    Between L1 to L2 = 240 volts

    Between L1 to N = 120 volts

    Between L2 to N = 120 volts

The following tests are going to be done with the dryer disconnected from the wall outlet, unless I tell you to plug it in. So lets keep checking to see why your GE-Hotpoint dryer do not start.

    2. The timer contacts:

Remove the red wire on terminal B on the timer and take a reading between terminal B and terminal C with brown wire on it. Reading should be 0 ohms

    3. The thermo Hi-Limit right:

Take a reading between the brown wire on terminal C in the timer and the brown wire on terminal 1 on the start switch. The reading should be 0 ohms.

When the GE-Hotpoint dryer do not start, check for a blown hi-limit right. make sure that the exhaust hose is not clogged of this hi-limit will blow again in a short time.

    4. The start switch:

Remove the red wire from contact # 2 on the start switch and take a reading between terminal # 2 and # 1 with the brown wire on it. When you turn the start switch on, the reading should be 0 ohms

    5. The main motor:

Check between the red wire on terminal 2 on the start switch and yellow/brown wire on the door switch. The reading should be about 2.5 ohms. Burnt motor windings could be why your GE-Hotpoint dryer do not start.

    6. The door safety switch:

Check between the yellow/brown wire on the door switch and the ground terminal on the cord, with the dryer door closed. The reading should be 0 ohms

If you get a different reading that the ones that I posted here,
then you have to assume that the part is bad and it will need to be replace.

    Good Luck

If the problem you are having is that your gas or electric dryer is not starting, these are the parts you will need to check until you find and correct the problem.

    The wall outlet:
The right voltage have to be present at the wall outlet for the dryer to be able to start. 240 volts for an electric dryer and 120 volts for a gas dryer.

    The thermal fuses:
Some dryers have one thermal fuse and some have two thermal fuses wired in series with the motor. If any of the thermal fuses are blown that could be one of the reasons of your dryer not starting.

    The timer contacts:
The timer is the distribution center in the dryer, the timer will send the right voltage to each of the individual parts in the dryer. Most common problem with the timer, is burnt contacts.

    The motor:
The motor is in charge of turning the tumbler, turning the blower to circulate hot air inside of the dryer and making sure that the heating element won't come on when the dryer motor is not running. A bad or weak motor could be the reason for your dryer not starting.

    The door switch:
The door switch is a safety device use to prevent the dryer motor from starting or running when the door in the dryer is open. Burnt contacts or a broken actuator on the switch could be the reason that the dryer is not starting.

    The push to start switch:
The push to start switch is single pole single throw switch that is use to start the motor. Once the motor starts running the switch is no longer in the motor circuit. A bad push to start switch could be the cause of your dryer not starting.

    The cord:
Burnt terminals or wires on the terminal block could be the reason for your dryer not starting.

As you can see, if any one of these parts fails the dryer will not start.

The wall outlet - The thermal fuses - The timer contacts - The motor-The door switch - The push to start switch - The cord

Thor washer/dryer is either the same company or at least has parts. Go to their website and check for a number for support. You'll probably have to leave a message but they call back and the person can tell you what part you need and give you their parts dept or set up a service call...

INDESIT WIDXL126 IS IT A WASHER/DRYER IT WAS IN THE HOUSE WHEN I RENTED IT .THANK YOU.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
WIDL is! Washer Dryer so I would expect that you have the 'Xtra' version!
Methinks you could do with a manual anyway but unfortunately this forum does not supply any type of manual, installation instructions, electrical or schematic diagrams direct; it's just made up of ordinary guys and gals, probably at home and from all over the world, with experience of addressing problems and giving guidance for free on the web ;-0)
You will need to type into your search engine/web browser '(make) washer manual' and you should be presented with a number of sources from which you can either download for free or have to pay a nominal amount. During the process you will be asked for the actual model number!
Good luck,
John C.

Indesit washer-dryer wd125 manual

Hi,

I've been looking for these instructions and have just stumbled across them . Just inside the door there should be a barcode. On the top right check the model no. mine is WD 12S, despite the model no on the outside being WD125.

If so, look here http://imagebank.indesitcompany.co.uk/brochures_online/pdf/indesit/Laundry/WD12S.pdf
