No picture no sound.

Model# 9p6034 c102, serial# 33192207, ptv835
I have no picture and no audio. The green led on front works as if everything is ok. it flashes no code and the set makes no sound at all and un plugged for several days to reset its self at no unveil " Its dead". The fuse is good and i have the main board ( attached to the power cable) out right now. I am good with a volt meter and a soldering gun. I am in need of a wiring schematic ( service manual ) and some good advice. This seems like the place to get both. thanks in advance.

The screen is blank with no raster at all and there are indications that the channel numbers are changing in the display.
This indicates that some of the low voltages are present but these may be derived from the standby supply.
Assuming there is no deflection and no HV, you either have a low voltage power supply problem, bad startup circuit, or bad horizontal output transistor (HOT) or other bad parts in the horizontal deflection. Initially check for bad fuses. For further examination if you are familiar with electronic repairs, you will need service manual to proceed or call an authorized tech service. http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/9p6034/cName/phillipsmagnavox

The flyback transformer (FBT) must be removed and have it checked thru a flyback checker from any electronic repair shop. You will be able to confirm whether you have a problem in the high voltage section.

If (FBT) is OK look for a shortage in the horizontal section specially the horizontal output transistor.

The area around FBT must be thoroughly cleaned with electromotive cleaner.

Inspect for cracks, bad solders, burnt resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc and resolder or replace.

If you can not do the repairs yourself, it is better to take it to a TV repair shop.(Note that this way the cost increases drammaticaly)

The set has gone into protection overload status.

You must unplug the power cord for 3 or 4 hours and power it up again.

If the hard reset above does not bring it back to life it needs technical service. There are about 10 sections that would need to be checked to see where the overload conditions are causing the problem.

As a general rule this type of failure is severe and expensive. Typical costs of repair are always over $200 and most often closer to $400.

Common failures are main power supply, high voltage supply, deflection amplifiers and so on.

This is not a user or home remedy type repair. If you are lucky it may be something not so costly, but experience tells otherwise.

Good Luck

No, you don't need a new lamp. The set has gone into protection and needs serious servicing. Any one of the 10 or 12 sections of the tv when defective can cause the set to go into protection. The analysis of which one and where can only be done by a competent technician. A very common problem with all rca sets is power supply failures and convergence sections. The cost of repair - which is always an advanced job for the most experienced techs - is around $300 to $400 area.

If you like the set, keep it and get it fixed. If you want to move up to some of the new technology such as Plasma or LCD flat screen stuff now would be an excellent time to do it. The problem with rca sets is once they start failing other failures follow soon thereafter.

    Hope this helps.

    Good Luck

Yes the coolant gets crud buildup in it over time which will cause the color and clarity to get very poor with obects that will glow around certain bright ojects. You can get the Phillips CRT coolant replacement kit from www.tvrepairworld.com which has the CRT coolant for all 3 CRTs and also includes the Cd with instructions on how to do the replacement.

Philips Magnovox Rear Proj. TV wont keep vertical/horizontal hold

Hello clifftonian,

I would suggest checking the HV trippler block and the voltage output from the IHVT (Integrated High Voltage Transformer), and comparing them against the schematic diagram. In addition to this after solving your HV problem I would suggest doing a complete convergence adjustment, both static and dynamic. Just don't go replacing parts because that approach does more harm then good. Troubleshoot the problem and find out what other parts are marginal and replace them all. Your stepdad is correct with a good place to start.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Put the old chip back in...does the shrinking/expanding problem return? If so the new chip may be faulty.

If the problem stays the same - no audio/video  - check your soldering, cables, etc.

DPTV335

Ed did you change the yokes when you put the DPTV series CRT into the PTV chassis? If not its most likely the vertical output or the Horizontal output that got destroyed. If you changed the yoke its most likely the HV generator.
On the DPTV chassis that should shutdown the vertical deflection which would leave audio working worse case scenario would also be the HV generator and Horizontal output.

Remove the rear panel. With the TV on you should see a red LED near the center of the PCB. There should also be 5 green leds, 3 to the left a 2 behind. If there is no red leds, check the fuses. If there are no green leds or maybe 1 or 2, disconect PSD5. It's a connector on the left side of the power board that connects to the audio board. It's the 3rd on fro the back. It's labled. With that disconected, turn on the set and look for the green leds. If all 5 light, the power supply is OK and you have a problem beyond that. If they don't all light you have a bad power supply.
