Hi, have same problem w/Toshiba laptop not playing DVD just CD, but no error code. Device manager says 'device working properly' Does that also mean drive has failed? Light goes on, makes a noise, then tells me there's no DVD in drive when there is. Reads cd's fine and is only 2 years old. Actually, upon buying laptop, DVD drive was faulty/shorting system; exchanged box for new laptop at store. Then, warranty covered one DVD/CDROM drive replace, when drive light wouldnt go on at all, and apparently failed. If I replace this again, it will be the third time on a 2 year old laptop A105. Is this HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA DEVICE the infamous Matshita maker I saw on other pages?

Before it began this recent ignoring of all dvds put into drive, it failed and was saying a full dvd movie was 'both empty and full' in disc properties, but wouldnt play one particular new dvd movie.....but would play other movie DVD's I had....then it started playing again including the prejudiced dvd above....now it has failed for all dvds. Weird. Can you recommend a brand to look for if I have to buy a new one, that isnt such total junk? :)
    Thanks

Actually, I see you mention mild shock can kill these dvdrom drives, and ours was vibrating recently at one point to beat the band...I bet more than one screw holding it in would be a better idea. (LOUD vibrating, with alot of bass noise shaking, it reminded me of a machine gun).

    Thanks

    Oops.

    Steps taken to resolve:

    reformatted entire system. No change.

Tested DVD' movies we previously viewed in drive. No go.

Tested TDK highspeed Data DVD - it will read this.

(Is there any harm letting my geekish 12 year old look for loose parts
on the drive before we toss it? He thinks something has vibrated itself
loose. Is there such a thing on these drives?)

I am presuming that you have the correct driver for the DVD, and nothing else has changed (no new DVD software that might cause this problem by addressing the drive improperly). Nero and Power DVD can both cause problems if your DVD is newer than the software version.

Now, all that out of the way, here is the diagnosis. DVDs are much higher density than regular CDRoms. DVDs average 4.5 gb, whereas a CD is caped at 0.7gb (700mb). Thus, DVD drives have very low tolerance for ANY kind of error. Therefore, DVD combo drives are not likely to last as long as the rest of the laptop's hardware. Shock at relatively minor levels can damage a DVD drive. Often, they will still open a regualr CD, but fail to read a DVD directory. Your error code, if it is posted at startup, indicates the drive is malfunctioning. You can test it easily. Usually there is only one screw that holds it in (underneath the laptop, about 4 inches from DVD tray cover, towards the center). Turn off laptop, flip it over on a towel, and remove that screw. Tuurn the laptop over again, then insert a straigtened paper clip into the small hole in the DVD tray face. Be careful to push lightly and STRAIGHT in with this paper clip and the tray will pop open. Pull gently, and the whole DVD body will slide out. With a new or used replacement DVD or CD, reattach any hardware on your old DVD to the new one, then slide it back into the laptop 9no need to install screw just yet) Start laptop. If error is gone and DVD plays OK, insert the screw again and make your old tray cover fit the new drive (always can be done if you look closely to find the tabs and remove it gently). Sometimes some plastic will need to be trimmed with an eExacto knife to get a good fit.

My CD rom is not working

No matter what type of laptop you own or how you use it, the CD-ROM or DVD drive is an important part of the unit. With the CD or DVD drive in place, you can play your favorite music or watch your favorite movies, so when that CD or DVD player stops working it is important to get it back in service as soon as possible.

1.Locate the bypass hole on the CD-ROM drive. There is a very small hole, generally located underneath the eject button, on every CD-ROM drive. Unbend a paper clip and insert it into the hole until the CD tray pops out.
2.Remove any CD that is in the tray and replace it with a CD laser lens cleaner. These laser lens cleaners are available at computer shops and electronics retailers.
3.Run the laser lens cleaning program, then try to play a CD again. If that CD fails to play, replace it with another CD and try again.
4.Shut the computer down and remove the AC power cord if cleaning the laser lens does not resolve the issue. Turn the laptop upside down and slide the battery release lever to the unlocked position.
5.Remove the battery and set it aside. Then locate the screws that hold the CD-ROM drive in place and remove those screws. Slide the CD-ROM drive out of the bay, then slide it back into the bay until it snaps securely into place. Replace the screws that hold the drive in place, turn the laptop back on and try to read the CD again.
6.Log on to your computer and right click on the "My Computer" icon. Select "Properties" from the menu and click on the "Hardware" tab. Click the "Device Manager" button and expand the CD-ROM section. Right click on the CD-ROM and choose "Update Driver" from the menu to download and install the latest device driver from the CD-ROM manufacturer.

I hope you find it very helpful. Thank you for using fixya

Error code 00F0:136C IDE FAILED BLANK MEDIA OR NO MEDIA IS PRESENT IN OPTICAL DRIVE. IS THE HDD FRIED OR WHAT?

Hi,

You probably ran the 32-bit diagnostics in this Dell computer.

The error code 00F0:136C, actually is talking about the "OPTICAL DRIVE,"which is your CD/DVD ROM; not the hard drive.

That will fail since, I am assuming you didn't put anything inside the CD-ROM.

The diagnostics tests everything and in this case, it tested the CD-ROM and failed since there is no CD inside the CD/DVD-ROM.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Oliver

Acer aspire 3690, my cd-rom will play movies, audio and some old games can be read but mostly refuses to read most of my game disks now, any ideas??

Try an external DVD drive that you can connect to your USB port. The drive you have in the laptop either has a dirty laser lens, which you can carefully clean with a "Q" and alcohol, or the laser itself may be going out. The drive can be replaced. You mentioned you have a cd-rom. If you can play movies (DVD) it is more likely a DVD drive instead of a cd-rom. CD-ROMs can only read data or music.

I got a lap dell that dont play should how can i get that installed for free striaght to my laptop

Don't play what? Games? Movies? If you mean movies, you can try Artisan DVD player. This will only play DVD movies if your laptop has a DVD-rom. If you only have a cd-rom, no software will help you play a DVD movie. You can get the software free here:

Dvd does not work. Light blinks but not seeing it . is there a driver i need or what do i do to fix this

You must determine if the problem is the media you are using (CD, DVD) or the drive itself. (CD/DVD Rom)
First see if the driver is installed for the CD/DVD ROM by Right clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Clikc the plus sign next to DVD/CD Rom Drives to see if there is a yellow exclamation point, or question mark. This means you need to install the correct driver. If there are no yellow exclamation marks or question marks your driver is installed properly.
Next try playing difffernt CD's to see if any of them work. Confirm they are good CD's by playing them on another device, then try them on your Compaq. If the Cd's play on another device you may possibly be experiencing read errors on the CD/DVD Rom drive. Try using a CD Laser Cleaner that will clean the laser head of the CD /DVD Rom. it looks like a CD with small brushes on the music side. This may solve a read error problem. if that does not solve your problem you may need to replace the CD/DVD Rom drive.

what do you mean not recognized? not detecting the drive or not reading? if not recognized by windows you can check the driver for drives in the windows if not reading it is the lens problem..if the lens problem, the solution only is to replace the lens or to replace the whole drive
