Your belt is of the guide arm try replacing the belt usually located @ the head of the vacum there should be 4-6 screws holding the head on remove it in well ventilated area try putting on mask cause you will release all the dust from the head when you take it apart you will see the belt around the brush remove the brush and bearings togther then replace belt if you know your model # of your vacum u can usually find replacement parts online or @ most sears and walmart outlets.

I have the same problem, but it's not the belts, I have a Dyson DC07 I've removed all the belts and the clutch unit, plugged it back in and the noise and smell persist, tempted to open the whole thing up but not sure what to do once I've got the motor out... replace / repair?

Burning smell and noisy motor

burning smell is over heating motor --could be bearings but if it is an old machine it could be the impeller blades that create the vacuum are loose --noise and that is loading up the motor
unless it is a new and expensive vacuum cleaner you could take it in to an appliance repair shop for a quote or if old simply junk it and get a new one

Why does my vax power 2 cylinder hoover make a noise and smell of burning rubber when I turn it on we have cleaned inside and out and all filters

That is the smell of perhaps burning insulation when there is excessive current going into motor. If something in unit is binding the motor will not spin fast enough, generate less back emf, use more current, overheat and burn out!!!!!!!!!!!

If it has a drive belt and that is rubbing up against something and not turning properly that will also cause the smell.

Do not use unit in this condition -you risk permanent damage.

Vax v-091 burning smell and clunking noise

Is there something stuck inside, underneath, being turned along with the motor? burning smell usually means something got caught and the belt snapped. Not expensive and don't know if it's an easy DYI. Shouldn't cost too much to have it repaired or you can google the brand and model and the word belt, see what you find.

The motor in the Kenmore canister started smelling like wire burning and then made terrible noise. I ordered the exact replacement motor and swapped them. Installed the same way the original came out, ran...

Hi,

Actually there not supposed to burn up. I have read some reviews on that model Kenmore and it seems it is plagued by electrical problems.

I would definitely contact Sears customer service.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Burning smell from motor

Hi,
Check your filter and also check that nothing got pulled into the motor...otherwise the motor is burning up and will need to be replaced... probably cheaper to replace the whole vacuum..

Wet vac motor making noise and smells like burning

Hi I would suggest that the burning smell and the noise will mean that the motor is burnt out. You can get them pretty cheaply from the internet and they are quite easy to fit.

Makes a loud noise like a grinding noise then smokes comes out and it smells like burning rubber? When I take the (rod) brush off with the belt then run the vacuum there is no more noise? Please help me...

Your belt is worn and stretched and so it is slipping on the motor drive shaft. That is why it is noisy and smells like burning rubber. You simply need to replace the belt. You can get replacement belts here:
