Acer Aspire 5050 won't boot up

I have an Acer Aspire 5050 that will not boot up. It has a Hitachi sata hard drive. I tried to use Hitachi's diagnostic cd. It gave me the error that I need to install driver. It didn't say which one. When I start it up it says " media test failure, check cable. exiting pxe rom. Operating system not found. Is this a faulty motherboard, or just the hard drive. I do not have a restore cd for the drivers, so I couldn't try that. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for your speedy reply. I obtained this used. The former owners never made a back up cd . They lost the Vista cd. IIs it possible to put XP Pro on it? I do know how to format and reinstall the operating system. It has no problem using the cd. I can run Hitachi diagnostic from it.

I have a similar problem. I have installed XP pro & suddenly my laptop got turned off. This happened earlier & somehow I managed to re-install the OS. Last week it happened again & while re-partitioned my disk, the disk was not detected, My friend connected his own hard disk to test this, but he also lost his hard drive. The bad thing here is both are hitachi hard drives.

Do you know how to format or reinstall an operating system? If you do try this, get operating system cd installer and reinstall it. Once it starts, it will run a system diagnostics on your pc to check its integrity. This will enable you to determine which one of your hardwares are faulty. Let me know If you have any question.

Its just a loose connection. Get a windows installer and boot from cd, follow IB4G2008's advice. remove the hard drive and reconnect it. then reboot. Let me know if you have any question.

Ooh...no operating system. not good. ok..can you boot from CD? if that works, and it asks you to reformat the hard drive, STOP. Take the hard drive out, and then GENTLY reinstall. Maybe that will work. HD's can fail on laptops, just by a series of vibrations or shocks to the case.

got backup for your Acer?

ok..then do the reboot and installation with XP..you'll need to reformat the drive, and hang around. just did one myself, and took almost 2.5 hours.

It sure sounds like a problem with the hard drive. Acers usually don't include diagnostic tools to check it out, but that is what I would do next. If you don't know how to proceed, use a hard drive diagnostic like DFT to diagnose the hard drive.
visit http://www.hitachigst.com/support/downloads/
to get the info and download the DFT program. This will work on non-Hitachi drives as well, so don't worry about what type of drive is in your Acer.
If the drive is bad, it is a fairly simple matter of installing a new hard drive and reinstalling windows onto it. It's hard to say if the data on that drive is recoverable or not.

Acer aspire 5050 hard drive problems

If your computer has been working and when you start it you get the message that there is no hard drive (no boot device), then your hard drive has gone bad.
If you have gone into the bios and don't see either a hard drive or a CD or DVD, then most probably you are looking at a motherboard problem. It is not very common for the hard drive and CD/DVD to go bad at once.

Acer Aspire 5050 won't boot at all

Yes, it's not the hard drive.

More than likely it's your motherboard.

There's not much you can do besides trying to boot the computer without the battery, and removing and reinstalling the memory.

Hopefully you'll get lucky!

Won't Boot

It appears your hard drive's MBR is wrecked.

Buy another hard drive.
Buy an external hard drive enclosure.
Replace the current bad hard drive with the new hard drive
Use your restore CD to reinstall your OS.
Put the bad hard drive in the external hard drive enclosure and acces it after your have installed the new OS.
Hopefully the MBR on your old drive is bad but you can access the data. It may also be that the hard drive is dead and you would have to send it to a data recovery service to recover it.
