Camera wont work with card cover closed

My camera works perfectly when there is no memory card in it but as soon as I put a memory card in it will not power up and the screen shows nothing, and I cannot take photo's. The battery's work and so do the memory cards Also the SSWF occasionaly flashes

I have 2 freshely charged battery's and 2 memory cards and have tried combinations of them all with no change.

Follow up

It is not a short in the battery compartment as was suggested elsewhere, it does not power off till the detent switch is depressed.If I take the card out and close it, it comes on and works great except there is no card. Just put a brand new Lexar 2GB card in it, but it was also doing it with the Kodak 1 GB card.

GAVE up hope, Experts here could not figure it out, sooo

I am returning it, since when I took it to a shop today they said 180-200 MIN plus parts!,

Cannon, Here I come!.......

Carefully scrutinise the battery/memory card cover. In the camera is a switch that supposes to tell the camera if the door is locked correct or not. Perhaps something is blocking the correct working of that switch. Clean the inside of the battery / memory card holder and its door.
Open and close the door several times and hope he switch starts working as it should. I hope there is no spring broken or blocked.

Check to make sure the batteries are inserted correctly.
Clean the battery terminals with a dry cotton swab that has a fine and soft tip, and then re-insert the batteries.If the [Memory Card / Battery Cover] is not securely closed, the power of the camera may not turn on.Close the [Memory Card / Battery Cover] securely, and then turn the power on.
If your camera still does not work even after you have performed the above procedures, your camera may be malfunctioning. Please have the camera serviced in this case.

Fuji FinePix F470 works perfectly unless a memory card is present

Some cameras are very sensitive when it comes to memory cards for some odd reason. I would try a different make of sd card.

Resetting the camera
If your camera does not respond when you press any
buttons, try resetting the camera as follows:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. If you have an optional memory card installed, remove it.
(Although removing an optional memory card is not
necessary for performing the reset, it eliminates the
memory card as a possible cause of the problem.)
3. Remove the batteries from the camera for 5 to 10
seconds.
4. Reinsert the batteries and close the Battery/Memory card
door.
5. After verifying that the camera works without an optional
memory card, turn off the camera and reinsert the card if
you have one.

ok...it appears that your card reader is really in trouble. Can you inspect the inside, to ensure that no gunk crept inside? That would explain some of the issue.

Can you test those memory cards on a reader on a laptop, to ensure that they are not corrupted, just in case?

I have had this problem, and it was a bad CF card. Are you sure both of them are good? If a computer can read them, maybe try formatting them.

just look in the slot for a short circuit. some times it does hapen on cf cards or on xd cards.
