Washer won't drain

Sears Kenmore probably 25 years old. Great machine. The water won't drain, all it will do is wash. I've tried changing the cycle with no luck, just keeps washing. I probably need a new washer but would like to at least get the water out. Thanks for any help.

I just tried to post a lengthy solution based on the assumption that your washer is a Whirlpool belt-drive and that one of the solenoids on the wigwag is jammed. Unfortunately the system ate my solution and won't give it back. THAT'LL learn me to click on "More Options"!

To make it brief:

1. Determine if your machine really is a Whirlpool belt-drive and has a wig-wag.

2. If so, determine if the solenoid (on the wigwag) that shifts the machine into agitate is stuck.

3. If so, see if you can unstick it and let the machine shift out of agitate by itself. If not, see if you can remove the stuck solenoid (perhaps wigwag and all) and slide the shift bar yourself.

4. If you can just get the machine into neutral, even if the motor isn't running you should be able to lower the drain hose into a bucket and empty the water that way. As I recall, there's a valve near the pump that prevents the water from draining while the machine is in agitate mode.

Perhaps a moderator (or the local equivalent) could move this whole discussion from the Fisher & Paykel blind alley it ended up in to somewhere more appropriate -- Kenmore? Whirlpool (belt-drive)?

You may want to look into the possibility that the water pump is not working. It may even be just clogged with clothes fibers. As it is a Kenmore, it is made by whirlpool, and pump for that type is a fairly simple repair, it might be worth keeping. As for getting the water out because you want to get rid of it, a siphon hose is the simplest route without taking anything apart.

Probably no hope. The washer is an old Kenmore (25 yrs.) It worked fine until today it only fills w/ hot water, and then only very little. Should I put it out to pasture?

Well, it certainly doesn't owe you anything - 25 years service is very respectable! You could have it checked - but investing more than a little money into a 25 year old machine doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Parts for your machine are probably going to be hard to locate, too. Newer machines do more with less water, energy, etc. If you lack the funds for a new, energy efficient machine - your choices may be limited to repairing what you've got - or picking up a newer, used machine instead. Used washers can be found for a fraction of the cost of new machines and many people change them because of color issues - not because they don't work. Check places like craigslist and freecycle for inexpensive (or even free!) replacements. In any case, knowledge is power.. price both new and used washers and maybe spend a few bucks to have the washer diagnosed. Knowing what replacement costs are compared to repair costs of a 25 year old machine (and maybe even an idea if the machine is going to have problems in the near future from the repairman), you can decide what fits your budget best.

I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply - thanks!

Won't fill, no cycling noises

Hello, try to see if there's a good water volume coming through the hoses attached to the washing machine. If there is, check to see if the screens inside the water-inlet valve are clean. (The water-inlet valve is the device on the washing machine that the fill hoses are attached to). If they're clean, you probably have a defective water-inlet valve. If so, you should completely replace the valve.

Thanks

Kenmore washer - water won't drain. It stops

If the water drains between the wash and rinse cycles, your motor and pump are probably OK. If this is a machine with a dial, try a different cycle, like normal instead of heavy duty. If that works and the machine completes the entire cycle then the timer probably has a bad spot. You might try to find a replacement timer if that is the case although I didn't have any luck with my 10 year old washing machine. Best of luck

This is the deal, your washer is way to old to fix. The board is going bad and that is why it will not cycle properly. It would cost about $150.00 to fix and that does not even include labor. Consider craigslist as you can find some great deals from 40-60 for a newer one. Hope this helps.

Machine will not switch to drain and spin cycle

If you take the front off in the lower right you will find a pump motor that controls the drain flow. This may defective. Use a shop vac to empty the water in washer if needs be. But remove and test this pump.

Spin Cycle on Wash Machine does not work

The problem is your lid switch. This is a common problem with this model washer, and a very simple & inexpensive problem to fix. Click on the following link for advice on how to replace:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

You can find a replacment switch at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Cabinet Parts" heading on the next page. I believe thats the heading the part is listed under. Sears has excellent part locator drawings to assist you in identifying the part. Once you have the part number identified, you can do some comparative shopping at other online websites too. Use the part number that Sears provides, however. A new switch usually runs about $25 to $35. In addition, make sure you check the lid strike. This is a small plastic piece on the lid that is used to activate the lid switch through a small slot. If the lid strike is broken off, it will give the same symptoms of a defective lid switch. I hope this information helps you. Please post back if you have any questions.

3 audible beeps every 20-25 seconds

Try unplugging the washer for about 20 minutes then plug back in and use. I have found that this actually works! The only thing I can figure out is that it takes time for the electronic control to clear. If that doesn't fix the problem I would call sears tech since it is less than a year old. They have a 1-2 year warranty.
