Heater going through start cycle 3 times, but will not stay lit. Took temp sensor out, cleaned it, and put it back in. heater worked fibe for a while, back to same problem. Does it sound as if maybe sensor is bad? or going bad? or was that just a coincidence?

This unit will give you an error code on the circuit board to help with a starting point. Read on further,

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Ignites but wont stay lit

I started getting the FL2 ignition failure error code on my Jandy Lite2 Spa heater again this week. I seem to get some variation of this problem every few years, by which point I've forgotten some of the details like which screws not to take out.

So, in hopes of saving someone else, and possibly myself, some
time in diagnosing this, here are some notes and pictures re
how I fixed it.

One time it was a bad ignitor. That's the part w/ 2 white wires sticking out just above the burners in the first shot. It's easy
to order online and replace.

The harder problem which I've seen most often is when the burner lights, but shuts off after about 5 seconds because the flame sensor doesn't detect the flame. The flame sensor is the glowing red rod to the right of the flames in the first picture. I took this shot after
cleaning it and getting the heater working again.

The second picture shows where it's mounted below the burner w/ one black wire leading to it. Don't remove the screw on the flame mount as the nut behind it comes off and is a bear to get back on. Besides, there's another screw that's nearly impossible to get to that keeps you from removing the sensor w/o removing the burner assembly.

However, I've found I can reach up from below w/ some steel wool and clean the corrosion off the flame sensor rod and that has fixed it
at least 3 times as I recall.

You should also check the burner tubes to see if they've been blocked by spiders. That happened to me once on a gas grill. Be sure to keep your face back when testing w/ the door off so you don't get singed.

Hope this helps!

Janitrol GUPS075-3 Furnace burners will not stay lit

The first thing I would do is make sure the flame sensor is clean, this is a metal rod immersed in the burner flame on the opposite side of the igniter. If too much oxidation builds up on it, it will not allow the burner to stay lit. To clean, just turn off furnace and remove flame sensor and clean with steel wool and then reinstall. If this does not solve the problem there may be a problem with the gas valve.

Have a overhead natural gas Hot Dawg heater, came with garage no previous owner help, no book it is a 48000 btu I believe. Prevoius owner had done some painting and heater had paint residue on it. I tried...

Remove all the burner tubes. Get a soft bristle brush and clean the orifices real good for each burner. Then remove the rust from all the burners with a wire brush and blow them out. That is what I would try first.

10 gal atwood water heater goes through 2-3 cycles on gas befor it will stay lit

If propane has been off for some time, good chance air in line, and it takes 2 or 3 tries to bleed air out. If this happens while you've been using it regularly, then maybe a cleaning of electrode would help, as it is a flame sensor as well.

this unit has neither flame sensor or oxygen sensor.it has an photo cell in it.look at the plate that is on the back of unit.that is the air pump filter cover.if you look very closly you will probbaly see tiny cracks around one of the holes, either the adjuster or the plug.these covers crack all the time and they are not noticeable.when they crack it changes the air pressure and the unit doesn't work right.let me know and i hope this was helpful to you.

Furnace not cycling properly

sounds like the flame sensor needs to be replace. You can try cleaning it with steel wool. This will get you by for a little while.
