Question about Canon PowerShot S400 / IXUS 400 Digital Camera

Canon SD400 LCD screen does not work

I had the camera for 4 years and did not have any complains until about a week ago the LCD screen suddenly turned pink with horizontal lines and then completely stop. If i take a picture I can view it on my LCD but I can not use the LCD screen as a viewfinder before taking a shot. Also this impacts focussing on the subject.

I purchased it for $349 and wonder if there is an easy fix to this

It is the S400 model and I called CANNON who thinks it could be the CCD card malfunction which they will fix without charge.

    Thanks again

I, too, have a Canon PowerShot -- a S410 Digital ELPH, that's exhibiting the same problem -- a pink curtain -- horizontal lines that completely obliterate the normal view I should be getting when I look through the camera's LCD monitor. Supposedly, this is only a viewing problem --- the images the camera records come out ok -- although a number of shots I took with the camera came out displaying some of the blurred pink lines and the images were blurry instead of being in sharp focus.

I thought the problem might be with the battery I was using -- that it might be losing its charge because it was an old battery, but now I see that the pink curtain may be the result of a faulty card in the camera and that Canon might replace the card at no charge.

I will contact Canon and see what they say. Thank you

I too had the problem (described above) -- of seeing the purplish vertical curtain whenever I looked in my Canon PowerShot S410's LCD monitor.

I contacted Canon, they sent me a prepaid shipping label I could use at my local UPS store; they repaired the problem and then shipped the camera back to me. I received the camera just now and the problem seems to have been resolved.

Thank you, FixYa experts, for identifying the problem and indicating that Canon was fixing it at no charge.

The symptoms you describe sound like a CCD failure. Canon is fixing this for for free for certain cameras, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of the camera's warranty status. However, the SD400 is not on the advisory list (although the S400 is). Please check the following two links for more info:

Check your battery which may be too weak to light up the screen but strong enough to work the camera.  Replace the battery and your problem may be solved.  Chuck in North Carolina

White LCD screen

The LCD connection may be loose or the LCD itself broken. You may need to have a service centre replace the LCD unit.

SD400 LCD Screen White after Replacement

There are a number of possible common faults that can cause the screen problem that you are describing.

It is possible that the new replacement screen is defective, or there is a defect in the ribbon cable, or the sockets are not making proper contact, or there is a cold solder connection at the socket or on the circuit board, or the driver circuits on the circuit board have a failure.

The service tech would try another screen, or ribbon cable (if changeable), or the circuit board to locate the defect. Once he finds the defective board, he will leave in the new replacement.

These cameras are serviced by modular approach.

A85 LCD stays off in all modes except "stitch"

Hi Toonz
I have exactly the same problem as Shimoni and Antonio with my 4 years old A85.
But sorry, its not a problem of the CCD, cause we all get a clear actual picture on the LCD but just in stitch mode! In any other shooting or playback mode the LCD is dark. So the sensor must be working well and Canon Germany doesnt repair for free. Our failure is different and we have to pay much more than the camera is worth ;-((

The matrix is dead. Probably because of an intensive light got into the lense while the camera was in night mode. It's dead. Nothing can be done.

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

LCD Dispaly malfunction

The screen has two components. The LCD, and the backlight. You can buy broken cameras relatively cheaply on ebay (or if you have it, craigslist). Do that, and you might be able to replace the screen.
