I bought the Little Disk a couple of months back. I installed it onto my macbook using the installation CD as instructed---voila, much more storage space available. I thought no more about it. Now, when trying to import a CD, I'm being told that my disk space is nearly full. Seems unlikely, given my external hard drive......Then I wondered, is it still connected? Has it become disconnected? I couldn't detect it anyway. So I disconnect it, and plugged it back (an old hangover from my PC days when that sort of behaviour was encouraged. I know that Macs don't like this--whoops). But of course this didn't work. So I went on some forums and found out that you should be able to detect your hard-drive by going to Finder-Go-Utilities-Disc Utility and it should appear in the left hand pane. Guess what---it's not there. Although it doesn't "appear" broken - I mean the light's on, there's no funny noise.......Is it salvageable? I'll own up, it has been disconnected before (without being ejected) by accident......
There are a number of things that could have gone wrong here.
1. Perhaps you have a bad (USB) cable, try another...
2. Perhaps it's the MAC that may be rejecting it, try it on another MAC or PC (if you do try it to a PC and the drive is formatted to MAC OS, you will need to search for it in disk management.
Right Click on my computer > select 'manage' > on the left-hand pane, select disk management. The drive may come up as unknown if it does appear there.
If the drive has a FAT or NTFS fomrat, then the drive should come up under my computer, although I still advise check disk management.
If you try it on another MAC, just check disk utilities again.
3. The drive has a controller failure, which could explain why it appears to be on but not functioning correctly (the controller function is to communicate with the CPU, so that it appears in disc utilities / disk management.
If you are effected by the second option, you will need to get in touch with MAC support...
If you are effected by the 3rd option, you will most likely need to have it replaced
Hope that helps and clears it up for you!
