The 9 pin serial port, dosen;t always have all the "lines" that are in the 15 pin. (obviously) normally ya need Tx, RX RTS, CTS. You need to find out exactly what lines are needed. Make sure via metering that they are all there. Also it may need to cross-over ie: Tx goes to Rx and Rx goes to Tx. Try using a Null Modem. OR try a USB to 9 pin Din serial adapter.

How I can transfer my files from a Acterna 5100E OTDR to my laptop? It only has a standard internal flash drive and 9 pin output. I have the original software.

This devices interface is extremely old technology the 9 pin connector is most likely a rs232 serial interface . If your laptop has a 9 pin rs232 interface you may need a DTE to DCE adapter .
if you do not have this old rs232 port on your laptop I think this device a usb to null modem rs232 DB9 Serial DCS Adapter Cable with FTDI.

Options for Adding Serial Ports
The serial port is prevalent on PC's as well as scores of industrial, scientific and consumer devices, making it a convenient starting point for communications. Since RS-232 itself is only suited to short connections (50 ft. max.) many applications require that it be adapted to fit requirements. RS-422, typically used for extending RS-232 communications, provides full duplex communications between two devices. It can also provide one way communications from one master to several slaves. RS-485 communications standard allows cable lengths up to 4000 feet. It also provides very high noise immunity. Multidrop connections up to 32 different nodes can be made over a single twisted pair cable along with a signal ground connection.
This article summarizes the choices a system designer has when adding a serial (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485) communications device. There are many different ways to add additional serial ports to your Desktop PC, Palm, or Laptop PC. USB, PCMCIA, PCI and ISA are some of the methods that will be discussed.
The Universal Serial Bus (USB) provides a high data rate and Hot Swap connection for PCs, providing an easy connection to a wide variety of multimedia and network USB devices. Generally considered to be for home or office use, USB is finding its way into Industrial applications.
PCMCIA Serial Ports are yet another way to add serial ports to a PC that has PCMCIA Slots available. Most Laptops today offer only one (if any at all) DB9 type serial ports. A PCMCIA Serial Card is a good way to add a serial port (or ports) to any laptop that is low on available serial ports (RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485).
PCI Cards are becoming more popular as a way to add serial ports to desktop PC's. PCI type slots are becoming the "norm" in standard PC's today, and PCI Serial Cards are an excellent way to add serial ports. The standard Desktop PC may only come with one serial port standard (if any serial ports at all). PCI Serial Cards use Software Drivers to address the ports to the PC.
ISA Cards are yet another way to add serial ports to the older desktop PC's. ISA type slots are becoming scarce in standard PC's today, but are still an excellent way to add serial ports. The ISA Cards are typically addressed using dip switches and shunts or jumpers to set IRQ's for each port. No Software Drivers are required with ISA style serial cards.
Palm OS PDA's may be connected to RS-422 or RS-485 data circuits using Palm adapters. These adapters offer total portability for collecting data and field service chores. The Palm device and the adapter will usually slip into a shirt pocket. Some models use the PDA's connecting cable, some include a cable and some are cradles that allow the PDA to nest in place and connect directly to the Palm base socket. PalmTerm Freeware allows you to transmit and receive data from the Palm serial port.

Where is the printer port on my acer aspire 7551-2961?I did not get an user guide and am a lost senior citizen trying to communicate with my grandchild.MCV

Most printers now use the USB port instead of the older parallel ports that has several input/out pins. Some printers (new-out-of-the-box) do not come with the USB cable, therefore purchase one for your printer if it requires a USB cable. The computer should have more than one USB ports to plug into.

Trying to connect a USB to the serial port of a Bernina Sewing Machine (Bernina 170). Has been working for a couple of years and has stopped all of a sudden. Does not work on and XP PC, Vista or win 7....

The Dynex adapter does not have any numbers on it. It was the one that is only about a foot in length and has a square center piece that houses the conversion electronics. Standard 9 pin RS-232 male plug on one end and the standard USB plug on the other end. I purchased it within the last month at BestBuy here in Austin TX.

Usb to serial converter

1. The USB to Serial has a comm port number, you can change that in Control Panel>Hardware and Software >Device Manager>Click on the adapter and make sure it's not disabled and try COMM 3 or a diffrent port you might have two conflicting each other.

I use Allen-Bradley and I also have to run it as admistrative privleges.

Hope this helps.

My older hi-pro box will not work with my serial to USB adapter. It keeps saying it cannot find it on com 1,2,3,4. In the device settings it says the hipro is on port 2 and the serial/USB bridge is on port...

I just set up a serial Hi-Pro box for one of my customers on their new laptop. According to Beltone, the only usb adapter that will work with the Hi-Pro (or at least the only one they have gotten to work) is a Belkin F5U409. I know some usb serial adapters don't use true serial communications if that makes any sense, so there isn't really a baud rate. They kind of just send out the communication in bursts...

In any case, ive only tried with the belkin adapter and that worked fine with no problems. The other point here is that your Hi-Pro and Adapter are on different com ports... This is odd, the hi-pro should be on the serial adpater's com port. Also the software i was using - Noah, with a beltone module for programming hearing aids.. only looked on com ports 1-3. The computer put the serial adapter on com 8 - which would not do. I checked for available com ports and saw that 2 was unused. I set the adapter to 2 and was able to set up the program normally.

I did this on Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit. The procedure for selecting the com port is the same on earlier versions of windows.

First, open device manager, open the list titled "Ports (COM and LPT)". You should see your serial adapter in there. Double click it. In the window that opens click the "ports" tab, and hit the button labeled "Advanced" In the window that opens there will be a drop down list to select a com port. Select the desired com port and hit ok. That should fix it.

Usb to serial adapter question

Try installing the Wacom USB drivers on the Mac. As I understand it, this adapter is designed to interact with devices that have their own serial drivers installed--such as a PDA, cell phone, camera, etc.--not necessarily with an input device, such as a drawing tablet, game controller, or pointing device. YMMV.

Serial to usb wacom tablet problem

I just got Vista and it killed my Intuos2 w/serial to usb also, but here's a half solution:
Download Wacom driver 4.78-6 http://www.wacom-europe.com/int/downloads/driver/driver.asp?lang=en. Make sure you remove any other Wacom drivers, tablet, and reboot. Install 4.78-6 driver and select serial port when the choice pops up. Plug in your tablet with the serial to usb adapter, wait a few seconds and click retry. Complete the install and reboot.
Your Wacom tracking should work now, but certain things might not work like pressure sensitivity and you'll get annoying error "reinstall driver" pop-ups.

I think you can aslo buy a PCI-serial card for your computer and skip the serial-usb adapter since Vista doesn't support the adapter for Wacom tablets.. but I'm not sure if there's a working Vista serial Wacom driver either.. or ever will be. The age of XP and Legacy support is at an end my friends.
