I can get video for the PS3, but no audio when I try to watch a DVD. It's connected via the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the console that came with the Pioneer Elite. There is no direct HDMI port to the flat screen. I am "assuming" the port on the Pioneer Elite "box" works just as well. I have the settings on HDMI for audio and have checked the Dolby box and made sure DTX was not checked. I have also tried an optical cable for audio and changing to setting to accomodate this cable, but no luck.

I guess I'll just spend the money and get Best Buy out here, but its two days before Christmas and I can only imagine what their schedule is like.

    Any ideas??? Thanks...

It's been fine for a year. I watch a ton of dvds and blurays. When I put in Jumper the audio went out.. It was working a second ago but nothing. I did a system update and messed with the audio settings but nothing..

Is it a faulty HDMI cable?

Hi,
I had the same sound problem, I stopped by EB games to try to get answers and WHoa.. the Sony Rep was there...BONUS!! Here's what you do....connect the HDMI cable from your PS3 to your T.V. for video, and connect your optical audio cable to your Home Theater. Hold your finger on the on/off switch of the Playstation for 5 to 10 seconds, you will have flashing blue and green lights while you hold it, then it will turn off (red). Then hold it again for another 5 or 10 secondsto turn it back on, keep holding it until the green and blue lights stop flashing. That resets the Playstation3 defaults. If you have an HDMI cable, you will see a message "HDMI cable detected, do you want to select it?" Say yes. Then you should get a second message about "Ps3 can automatically set optimal settings, yes or no" Again say yes. Now you should have audio and video through your T.V. Now to get the audio through your home theater, go to "system settings" (looks like a suitcase.) select sound settings...the PS3 should have selected HDMI already, change it to digital optical, and then move right to the optical settings, put a check mark in "Dolby Digital", and "PCM 44 mhz", and "48 mhz.." DO NOT...and I repeat DO NOT put a check mark in "DTS digital" If there is one there, uncheck it!! That is what is screwing everybody up, that is a movie sound setting usually only found on high end music concert DVDs (like the Eagles) you will get no sound on some games and some regular movie DVDs with this setting selected. Move your screen right once more with your left joystick...click "save" and Voila!! Go start the game!! Enjoy!!

PS3 to my 1080p LCD via HDMI. All of a sudden I lost sound during games and when trying to watch streaming Netflix. I believe this started immediately after trying the Little Big Planet demo. I tried the reset procedure (continuously holding down the on/off button to turn on the PS3 until I heard a beep) and then selecting to automatically set optimal settings. This brought back audio when accessing the PS3 menu but I would lose sound again once I tried a game.
MY SOULUTION:
Ensure you have set the PS3 to automatically set optimal settings (see above) and then disconnect and then re-connect the HDMI cable leading into your TV. I did this with the TV turned on and while in a GAME (not while I was in the PS3 menu.) The sound immediately came back.

Onlyforbrian... thanks man. I just selected the options you just mentioned for audio and I can hear the game once more. I've been dealing with this pain for a while. I tried the on/off button stuff but it only offered momentarily results. With your recipe I finally can use the ps3 as the first day.

There is no sound coming through my HDMI/DVI cable. is there any other way to get sound?

Try going into the audio setup of your PS3 to make sure you have it set to send audio down the HDMI. The PS3 allows you to send the audio down the HDMI, standard, or optical, but you have to change the settings.

Along the same lines, you can use an optical cable to run it to a receiver (or your tv if it has an optical input). Just remember to change it to the optical output.

I don't have the PS3 in front of me right now, but go to this link and it will explain it to you:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/audiooutput.html

Thanks for reading and good luck.

PS3 hdmi only working on some displays

I have noticed using an HDMI cable that with some of the newer tvs you have to set up the tv also to enable HDMI for a game system. Like you said before internet tv and blueray dvd player work fine. Try adjusting the settings on the tvs themselves. I have a 50in DLP mitsubishi, and had a very troubling time getting my ps3 to work on that particular tv set while it worked flawlessly on other sets. And what I had to do was enter my tv setup menu and then power on my ps3 with both my AV and HDMI cables connected, it would pick up the AV first. Then I would alter the video settings on the PS3 for HDMI, and unplug the AV cable. Exit the tv menu and then reenter it. Then I had to setup my HDMI port from the tv to game in order for it to work, where you can set options ar usually like cable/dvd/sat, and so on. Without my TV being set to game that way it would not work. Try this and see if it helps. Good Luck.

My ps3 wont read discs

The most common solution for this problem is to clean the ps3 with a good quality dvd cleaner. Let it run 1-2 cycles and most times the problem is solved. If this does not solve the problem then it is usually something that is not user serviceable and a warranty repair will need to be arranged with a Sony authorized repair center. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I've searched as much as I can on our work internet (which filters "games" so not a lot of help) but my problem is that with my PS3 connected to my new panasonic 65" 1080HD via...

Some Panasonic's have several HDMI inputs, but usually one of them will have a separate input for audio. You might move the HDMI to another port. If this doesn't apply I would run through the setup on the PS3, making sure that audio is configured correctly and not set for 24p audio. Most TV's cannot decode this audio format, unless it is very new.

Hope this helps,

Bad sound through HDMI

Is it only in Games or Movies?

Try checking the cables. (obvious I know but it must be said).

On the XMB (Cross Media Bar), go to settings on the left. Scroll down to "Sound Settings"

Choose "Audio Output Settings", then "HDMI", then "Auto"

If that doesn't fix it then choose manual and the most basic outputs first;
-Linear PCM 2ch. 44.1KHz
and
-Linear PCM 2ch. 48KHz

Depending on your surround sound setup your could get away with other options as well. Fist determine if your setup is 5.1 or 7.1, DTS or Dolby Digital. Then start with the lower KHz settings and work your way up.

Optical sound and HDMI sound problem

It SHOULD remember your preferences and you shouldn't have to select optical audio output every time you turn on your PS3; something is definitely wrong there to start with... As for a solution? I can only suggest checking that all your other equipment is functioning correctly before having to conclude that your PS3 is having some problems.
