Sony DVD recorder RDRGX210S PLaying back in ep only.
In the last few days my when I set the timer in sp for recording the playback is always in EP giving much poorer quality pictures. On the recorder display the EP is now always highlighted.
I checked the "set up menu" to discover that the record mode was in EP mode not SP as previously, how I don't know. Anyway I changed it back to SP and we seem to be okay now.I checked the "set up menu" to discover that the record mode was in EP mode not SP as previously, how I don't know. The reviews over at amazon.com are mostly poor. This is a troublesome unit by Sony. Here are some suggestions.
Check to see that when formatting a new DVD if you need to specify ep or sp. Try high quality DVD`s.
Try connecting to your tv with a s-video cable. The scart cable may be poor quality and the Sony will degrade the signal anyway when trying to pass the input signal straight through.
Set the timer to record less than two hours.
After trying all this, if you are in warranty, send it in for repair. Good Luck. :) The reviews over at amazon.com are mostly poor. This is a troublesome unit by Sony. Here are some suggestions.

The only real cure will be to clean the video head. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid that whatever recorded you EP mode tape was not set up well tracking wise. So other machines struggle to track the tape. Some VCR's will only playback SP or LP tapes and don't have EP mode. In which case you should check to see if these VCR's can play the EP tape and if they can't find one that can.
In a VCR SP which stands for standard play on an E180 tape will last for 3 hours. So you can record 3 hours on it and much longer in EP however the quality of the picture will be less.
However I suspect that you could mean a DVD recorder. In which case a 4.7GB disc will last for 120 minutes on SP and 240 minutes on EP. Again there will be a loss of picture quality on the longer setting, but most people can cope with that.
Most VCR's have a default recording setting for recording speed or other settings. It's just a question of finding the right menu. Have a good look around the menus. However the VCR might default to SP after recording in EP, however the playback should switch to EP when playing.
I solved it myself by selecting guide on the remote, then the tv screen said enter plus code. ijust type in all 0's for each space given (0000000) then the setting instantly changrd to EP from SP. I pushed set on the universal remote , that was it. It was necessary to use the power button to turn vcr off like tthe TV screen said because I was just setting the timer. You can just go to menu or whatever next. I didn't appreciate FixYa trying to sell me a membership before even attempting to offer a solution. They could have at least faked trying to find a solution. Instant response we would like to offer our premium services ....
SP = Single Play (normal 1:1 recording) EP = Extended Play (normally allows two, four or even eight times the normal or Single Play length to be recorded, according to make/model.) Picture quality in EP will not be as good as SP.
it will automatically play at the speed the tape was recorded at. but if you want to change record speeds here's how: you should be able to access menu functions from the front of the vcr, if so, put a tape to be recorded into the unit and then set the timer for a couple of minutes.while you are on the timer menu it will ask you for recording speed. set the timer record speed to ep and let it record for two minutes and let it record for the full time untill it stops recording. the record speed will automatically change settings to whatever you used last on timer record.
Do you have a tracking control on the vcr if you do it should be centered during record It can be adjusted during playback to clear up the picture adjust it for the best picture
If you dont have a tracking control on the vcr then it may require a mechanical adjustment of the backtension or guidepost which requires special tools to perform
hi sir
the speed in EP is differ from sp ,EP it is much slow then all quality would be less cause you are using less magnetic particles on the tape so here are many reasons for bad recording
first may be you have to clean video heads
or ,you have to clean the path of the tape in the recorder there are some metal guides that turnes with the tape to get it rounds the heads they may be dirty
or clean the capstain pinch roller and its metal roller that makes it run ( the capstain roller )
or you should have new heasd drum sir
regards
What are “Recording modes”? for DVD-RW There are two recording modes available using this recorder: VR mode and Video mode. When recording to a DVD-R disc, recordings are always in Video mode. DVD-RW discs can be formatted for VR mode recording or Video mode recording. VR mode recording • 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available (SP, LP, EP, XP) • Not playable on regular DVD players • Recordings can be extensively edited • Total number of titles on the disc should be less than 99. Video mode recording • 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available (SP, LP, EP, XP) • Playable on regular DVD players (after finalizing) • Limited editing features • Total number of titles on the disc should be less than 99. Note : DVD-Video Format (Video mode) is a new format for recording on DVD-R/RW discs that was approved by the DVD Forum in 2000. You may therefore experience problems playing recordable DVD discs in some players. Symptoms include video artifacts, audio and/or video dropouts and playback suddenly stopping. Our company cannot take responsibility for problems playing discs recorded on this VCR/DVD Recorder in other players.
Gave it a try by the playback is still in EP.
I checked the "set up menu" to discover that the record mode was in EP mode not SP as previously, how I don't know. Anyway I changed it back to SP and we seem to be okay now.
