The laptop may have a hidden recovery partion which you can access from boot up. Turn the laptop off and then restart it. When you see the Gateway logo hold down Alt and repeatedly press the F10 key. From there follow the on-screen instructions to restore the laptop to factory defaults, it should take about half an hour but could be longer.
Remember to back up any data that you want before you restore the system.
If you can't access the recovery partition then you can use Windows to do it for you. Click on the Start Menu> All Programs>Gateway and then Gateway Recovery Management. In the Gateway Recovery window click on Restore and then select Restore System to factory default and follow the on-screen instruction. The computer will restart and proceed with the restore.
Hi, The way to restore Gateways is to hold down the ALT Key andrepeatedly hitting f10 then it should bring you to a boot sequence screen thenchoose the HDD and then hold down ALT and repeatedly hit f10 again that shouldprompt the restore feature for gateway. If that doesn't work, the only way to doit is to boot into windows and run the Recovery program.
ALL DATA WILL BE ERASEDON YOUR HARD DRIVE IF YOU PROCEED. YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE THEPOWER ADAPTER PLUGGED IN. DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR RESTART YOUR COMPUTER DURINGTHIS PROCESS.
In this case please check whether you can see gateway logo at boot up,then check hard drive and fan is running. If yes please check with external monitor. With the help of that you can find the issue with monitor or with the computer.
Likely the hard drive is bad. I would suggest testing the hard drive or having a technician test the hard drive, replace it if it is bad and restore your operating system
Sometimes they make the recovery disk with windows on it, but not the programs that start windows during the boot up phase. One of the three main files that boots into windows is corrputed or your Master Boot Record is missing. There are two options you can try without the OS disc so lets see if one of those will work: 1) boot up and press F8 to enter safe mode. Once in safe mode sometimes you can also get into window because just the minimum of the program is loaded. F8 Safe Mode>in windows>click start>accesories>system tools>system restore. It will allow you to restore your computer to a prior date before you have problems. 2)if that don;'t work then F8 safe mode and while in safe mode choose Last Known Configuration. Kinda works the same way as restoe but you don't have to be in windows to do it. If those don't work then get your hands on a windows xp disc, anyone's will do, don't have to be yours. Let me know how it goes.
Rate this solution. You can also find out about this at support.microsoft.com>help and support>type in Windows XP boot disk in the search engine. If those don't work let me know and we'll move on to phase II.
Boot into safe mode and see if you can either roll back the driver restore the computer to the date right before you downloaded it.
the link is for directions on how to boot into safe mode.
Another option , if you have on board graphisc alos is to hook up the monitor to the onboard turn it on in BIOS and change the driver for the card using the onther graphics.

The Gateway GT5220 has an AMD Athlon 64 processor. It has been
documented that Windows XP SP3 doesn't play well with some AMD CPUs.
I'm pretty sure this is one of them. I would suggest attempting a
system recovery using a restore point on a date BEFORE you installed
SP3. If that doesn't work, you might consider recovery using the
original Gateway Restore CD. It will likely wipe the system, but that
might be the only choice.
I would NOTstart with the total reload option. We have a couple others
before you get there, so try the restore point and then let me know the
results. We'll go from there...
