83 shovel, POS. Just changed starter, new heavy cranking sealed batt., solenoid, bendix drive, batt. cables. All heavy duty. Tried starting it the other day (after keeping batt on trickle), very cold day. Starter, or something, Stuck. Batt got hot and bubbled inside. Disconnected batt. and took inside. Just tried again, turned once and that was it. Tried jumping w/hot box. Nothin. Now I don't even get Light from the headlight. POS is Dead, dead, dead.

Electronic ignition on a 79'? you got some mods? check for spark at the plug; check for fuel; if you got fuel/air and spark physics mandates that you will have combustion so summpin aint quite thur. stop have a coldy enjoy the way it looks for a night and start with a not so fresh mind tomorrow. oh yeah you said just rebuilt. did you paint the frame while the motor was gettin done? if you left the paint on your motor mounts on the frame BINGO! the frame to motor bolt down spot just happens to be the ground pathway for yer ignition on a 79' shovel. you can show voltage potential all day but if there isnt a ground pathway then it's only potential and not current so scuff the paint off the mount positions and try again. if this is what happened don't freak just loosen everything up lift the motor just a bit and run some emery cloth through the space. let me know if you need more details.

Hello, I just changed the starter on a 91 fatboy. everything worked as it should for couple of days. Today when I switched on the ignition, the starter engaged without pushing the start switch. It did this...

The new starter has gone bad,or a drop in voltage(amps)has caused this.If you have a 2 amp slow charger, use it to charge the battery up 8 hours or so.Then try the ignition, and starter, and see if the problem has gone away. Also see if the ignition wire is interfering with the starter engage wire. And look at the engage wire to see if it is up against the large cable to the starter. If none of this helps, replace the starter.I hope this was helpful,if so,please let us know, thank you.

82 FXRS that won't start

I have an 82 FXRS as well. I love it even though it has a vibration that comes and goes (motor mount issue most likely.) I would check for broken/loose connection on the solenoid before I started replacing components. I'd check the switch as well. Can't really reach the solenoid to jump it direct. Check the small stuff first.

Harley davidson won't start

Test for power to the solenoid when you push the starter button. This should help to eliminate the switch, relay, wiring etc. You can also run a jumper wire from the large (power) cable on the top of the starter to the green wire on the white connector on the end of the starter.

sounds like you have a voltage drop (that is a loss of power between the start button and the starter solenoid) the wiring on that circuit may be too thin. to remedy this problem you need to put a relay in the circuit. let me know if you want to know the details of how to wire the relay up.

1991 harley FXR won't start; replaced bad starter. it still won't start

- If the starter is turning the motor , I dont understand why u replaced the relay and the ignition....but - thats water under the bridge now .... Open the primary and check the jack shaft... put a pliers on it - pull it out and turn it 1/4 turn a few times - make sure its not binding. Take a look at the bushing on the outer primary.... may need to bevel the edges a little. Make sure the battery is charged enough to give the engine a few strong turns. Let me know what you find

Starter won't engage

better yet...............even if you have the minimun 12.5 volts on the battery, the amps may not be suffiicent to turn the starter and you will hear a clacking noice. the battery probably needs to be replaced.
